The first may flies of the season were showing up over the weekend. On the east side in the Big Point area there was a hatch of small sized flies that were showing up. Nothing too bad yet as far as quantity.

I was graphing a lot of what i was guessing was mayflies coming up off the bottom. It was generally a cloud hovering just above the bottom – about 2′ thick. I was marking fish and could not get them to bite. I then lengthened the snell on my phelps floater to what i thought would get it above the cloud and bingo, instantly hooked a 23″ fish. My partner and i continued to work the area and pulled 6 more fish up to 25″.

On a side note – I was awestruck by the beauty of that huge orange moon coming up on the lake Saturday night. That alone was well worth the price of admission. It was absolutely gorgeous!!

I’m glad to hear that someone else fishes the Phelps. I also tie them up to longer snells but my problem is fishing them in the weeds. They seem to drag a lot of weeds with them which I blame on them floating with the hook down. Any advice for weed fishing Phelps would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you ever tried a plain hook with an in-line float bead or cylinder in place of the floating jig? That’s what we do on the river when we’re pulling through the nasty stuff. If it’s real bad, go with a hook with a weed guard. Mustad and other premium hook manufacturers all make some very light hi-quality hooks with very light wire guards that work just dandy when working through the junk.

Slow Poke jigs tipped with a leech work well too.
