Newbie here, 1st post. Great site. A few buds and I are thinking about heading to Mille Lacs this weekend. (2-9-07-2-11-07)

I have never fished on Mille lacs before. I was hoping for some pointers on where to go out of and what kind of depth to look for. We are looking for some walleyes, and maybe some jumbo perch. We are coming from the twin cities area, and I’m bringing the truck and pickup camper to sleep on the ice. So will it be minnows, or larvae? Do the walleyes like the Swedish pimple like they do on lake of the woods? What works best? Thanks for you help guys.

Just giving you some guff, welcome to the site. If I could share one piece of advice… stay mobile if you want to catch fish. It can be tough this time of year because now we’re drilling two feet of ice, and lord knows it’s going to be cold this weekend. Stay away, or at least outside of the crowds, find some good structure, and keep them spoons pumpin’. Good luck!

Without going into too much detail,…. Find your own piece to work over. Stick to the edges an tops early morning and get out to the bottom during the day. Spoons with fathead heads work and if you’re to cold to move, a plain hook is working too. The perch are getting together too. If at any point you find yourself on top of small perch, punch around the area in the deeper water in search of bigger ones. They’re there and the schools are getting bigger.

I would also suggest a good set of electronics, GPS and a Flasher are almost a must. A good Auger and a full tank of gas and start popin’ holes. stay out on the mud and deeper tranistions (mud to sand, sand to gravel, mud to rock ect.) I would work an area for no more than 30 min and then keep moving

    Welcome to IDA!!

Everyone has done a good job with the pointers they have given. One thing I would add is that it’s the Vikings Artic Blast this Saturday! Many of the Vikings will be on had around the lake at various resorts on a charity snowmoblie ride!! If you want to get up close to a Viking player or even a cheerleader you could maybe do so on Saturday!!!

For other info check out this the Hunters Point website listed here: Hunters Point Resort

Good luck, I’m glad we are seeing some warmer temperatures in the forecast!!! should turn on the bite!!

A little change in plans i guess. One guy has to work and one bailed out. The Guy that has to work is going to red lake the fowling weekend (The 17th). So I’m going to red lake for that weekend instead, so no mille lacs Ill put a post over there. Thanks for the help guys.

    Hey Matt!
Since I am going to Mille Lacs on Saturday I thought I would run this by you and anybody else who wants to chime in. I was on the North end Tuesday on a flat where the resort road runs pretty close by the east side of that flat. And as I was sitting there in my rental I kept thinking to myself that I should get over to the west side of this flat where there are no houses and the road is at least 100 yards away from the road.

I got the same rental on Saturday and I am thinking that getting away from that road would be a smart move. Which, of course means getting mobile with the portable and being out in the cold. What would you do? Thanks!

I will probably look you guys up on Saturday. What will you guys be in/on truck, wheeler, sled. What is the road like out of the Red Door?I know the ice is good, just wondering how far out it goes.Mobility is the key drewsdad,I will be on the move all morning. It is supposed to be decent weather, better anyway.

    Hey Aaron!
We will be out there with a truck. So our mobility is a little limited. I don’t dare go off-roading out there with all the stuff that has happened this year! The guys I’m with will probably stay in the rental for the most part.

I am going to try and work the structure immediately around the rental. As of last Tuesday there are a lot of spots on and just off of that flat that have no permanents on them. We will be getting out there around 11:00. So please do drop by sir!

Once you get past the first couple breakers you should be ok.I am going to call the Red Door tonight to see where their roads go.I am going about 5 am and will be leaving the lake in the middle of the day for awhile but I will be back for the evening bite.
