Great report, I am looking forward to many more as the summer progresses.
May 12, 2003 at 3:03 am #266444Great reports guys! Thanks much Bob and others. I was surprised, pleasantly of course, to see so many reports from the pond! Keep ’em coming.
May 12, 2003 at 3:35 pm #266486My brother and I started out at midnight on a rock pile on the south-east corner of the lake. While I was setting out the anchor my brother grabs a leech and makes the first cast. No sooner does the bobber stand up, but goes right under. Thinking he had put on one too many sinkers, he starts to reel it back in. Well, he had tied into a nice 24 incher to start the night!
It certainly looked like it was going to be a good night of fishing! Well, our two bobbers did not go under for the next hour or so. The small reef we were on started to accumulate boats and there was a lot of anchors going up and down. Between 2am and 4am when things settled down, we boated several more fish in the 18-21 inch range. We called it a night a little after 4am.
Back on the water a little after 9am Saturday. We tried several areas like Spider, Doe, Big Point, even some deep gravel areas without a bite. Tried a little bit of everything, bobbers, cranks, lindys…nothing seemed to trigger a bite. Did not see a fish caught all day. From the chatter on the radio, it appeared that the bite on the SE side was spotty. A fish here and there with most too big to keep.
With the weather man calling for rain and a big blow for Sunday, my brother hit the road. So I was solo for the Sunday night bite. Well, not really alone with a radio and a cell phone..lol. Dinosaur was not far off in his boat and we kept each other up to date on the fish we were catching. They got into a few fish lindy rigging the sand near shore and I anchored up in the same area as the night before. It was about 10pm when the bobber finally went under. That first fish went 20 inches and was followed up by another twin on the next cast. Then to top that off, the double turned into a triple. Three fish on 3 casts! I thought I was finally onto something. But that 3rd fish ended up being the last.
No keepers for me this weekend. Water temp was 46-48 degrees. I have got to believe that when the temp comes up into the low to mid 50’s, the bite will take off….

May 12, 2003 at 6:32 pm #266509Hey Jon,
Did bob tell you about the Trophy he won?
Congrats to Bob and his brother in law on winning the Big D classic. They boated 4 keepers for the win.
May 13, 2003 at 1:07 am #266543Just re-read my last post and I need to make one correction to the following line:
“With the weather man calling for rain and a big blow for Sunday, my brother hit the road. So I was solo for the Sunday night bite.”
That should have read as “Solo for the Saturday night bite”.

Congrats on the win, Bob. Who would have guessed 4 slots would be enough??!!

May 13, 2003 at 12:06 pm #266570I ditto pretty much the same reports from Bobber and Jon J. We had a tough time at times and the fish seemed really scattered. We caught fish when the graph showed us them. My partner and I boated one slot and over a dozen in the 19-24 range. Our best times where 5am to 7am and right at Sun set to and hour or so after. We found our best fishing in 5ft-12ft range on the rocks and all our fish caught on the sand (Malmo area) 14ft – 17ft. As Hooks mentioned we have an annual friendly competition every year for bragging rights for the year and Bobber and his partner Tim Folkerts took the honors for the second time in the last three years. They have been the bridesmaid several other years usually losing by a few ounces, so Congrats guys and be ready to defend it next year . Second place went to Jesse Mathias and Tom Winter who also fish hard every year, no matter what the conditions these guys stick it out and always bring in a good basket to the scale . I will try and attach a few pictures.
