EVERYONE SEEMS TO AGREE THAT LAST YEARS FEAST TO FAMINE FISHING WAS DUE TO AN ABUNDANT HATCH OF PERCH. HOW LARGE ARE THOSE PERCH AT THIS TIME AND WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON HOW THEY WILL AFFECT THE BITE? ARE THEY LARGE ENOUGH THAT THEY WILL ONLY AFFECT THE LARGE WALLEYE BITE? OR WILL 14-17 INCH WALLEYES STILL BE EATING THE 2003 PERCH?

Yes, i agree with your thinking and talked about this last winter. They didn’t get edible until late last fall but most of these Perch I would think will be too large for the slot fish to want to chase. Then if this years hatch is normal, those fry will be targeted by the slot fish come late July. Only time will tell.

i was seining today in front of my house on cove bay. each pass we ended up with at least 25 to 30 pounds of perch fry. they were from 2 to 5 inches long with most in the 2 to 3 inch class. we only ended up with about 4 doz shinners. watched the muskies for a while too, really cool! i don’t know what is normal but all winter long, looking down the iceholes in the bay i saw alot of perch and today the size of the perch schools were quite large. i guess we will find out in about 5 years .
