Tip up set-up for Mille Lacs?

Anyone have a suggestion on how they set-up their tipups walleye wise, I was thinking a single size 6 hook, with a leader of 10′ vanish from the tipup line to the hook. Sound good enough?

I like to add a small bead just above the hook, but otherwise your setup sounds pretty close to what I use. At night I like to change the bare hook to a blue or purple glow demon. This setup has taken a lot of fish for me, although I wish they used a better quality hook.

I think you’re on the right track, Nick. What has worked for me is about 3′ +/- sum of 6lb Vanish. Some other guys go a little heavier on the Vanish. I use either a red or white glo #4 or #6 Gamakatsu Octopus hook. Don’t forget the tip-up line markers.

~3′ of 8 lbs Vanish and a red treble hook (1 to 2/0) with one of the hooks cuts off (so pretty much a double-hook) – stick one hook through the back of the minnow and other hook is free…

King I know you are a (Cheesehead)WI, but plain treble hooks are illegal, I believe here in MN. You need some sort of blade or something on it.

But to answer the ?, depending on minnow size, but a #2 red hook or sometimes a plain #2 hook either way both with a glow bead. With a 4-6 foot 12lb. fluorocarbon leader

You can use a treble as long as there is something above on the line that qualifies as a “lure component”. Blades or beads make it legal.

Thanks guys I do have a couple set-up, one with the plain hook, one with a treble with the blade to make it legal and another I can set-up for a spoon or something. Sounds like I’m good Thanks for all the replies

I started running a harness and small blade about 8″ above a treble this year and it has worked great. I forget what company makes them but theres some real nice glow paint coated trebles we use. Green has been the best. Put a small glow spinner above that treble and it seems to help more than hurt the rig. Looks alot like a drop shot rig. I have olny used this while running shiners and usually downsize to a bare hook with rainbows or fatheads. I use 10lb p-line for a leader line.

You need to have a bead and a blade no more than three inches from your plain treble hook. They sell some real small blades and use a slip bobber knot to hold it the 3″ up from the hook.

Thanks for the heads up Buck! Looks like I will have to slid mine down a bit. Too many rules Seems to be a good setup though!

New to this site. Checking in from Des Moines, IA. Just starting to get ice enough to go. I am heading up your way
this coming weekend for the first time. Does a guy do any good just jigging after sundown for the eyes, or are tip ups the way to go? We are going to be in the SE corner of the lake, so the fish should be biting good on the NW corner of the lake!

If your staying in a sleeper shack I would put some tip ups out in differant depths at night.

We are staying in a sleeper shack, but I think that we will bring up a couple portables. Wondering if many guys try moving around at night, or is it better just to sit tight? I also have an aquaview, hows the water clarity? Never used it before. Darn warm weather down here!

I would say to sit tight at night its safer that way. I think your camera will work good its pretty clear. I by no means an expert on Mille Lacs, just my opinion.

I sure appreciate the tips. Sitting tight does sound like good advice, maybe I can finally win back all the $ I lost at Devils Lake last winter! Hopefully we will get some nice fished iced as well, I will attempt to post photos if we do.
