Are people driving vehicles out to the flats? Any reports would be appreciated.

I heard from Craig D. that a truck and wheelhouse went down some where on one the North Flats. Anyone have any first hand observations?

The truck and wheelhouse went down on the south side of Gregs flat. They erected a big post at the sight probably to aid with recovery procedures. Last weekend George closed the root to the Boot due to crack about 2/3s the way out there. He told us to stay way clear of the wreck which we did. We fished Big Flat. We took a 4 wheeler with our wheel house to the Blue Jug and over. Since then the road to the Boot is open according to Hunters web sight. As far as fishing goes we did okay. We caught some eaters during the 6pm bite. The big ones bit in the morning 6am. Of course due to that was a rattle wheel bite only and not very productive. Of the five bites we got we only managed 1.5 fish the .5 fish was a pig lost at the hole. The other one was a 26 incher.

They got the truck and wheelhouse out today. It took a total of 4 hours to get it done. The Mille lacs messanger covered the recovery so look for a story on that in the near future.

This was out by Sloppy Joe’s the truck went through on Saturday the 13th. They took it out on Sunday. Needless to say we parked our trucks and took the four wheelers.

It is very neat to watch them get these vehicles out.

But fishing was very fun. Here is my boy with the biggest perch we got.

Here is our total catch from 1PM-5:15. We were out on Five Mile Gravel away from everybody. We also released 5 Walleye under 9 inches. Look’s good for future catches.

Pretty strange to see them pulling this truck out, with trucks in the background that are not that far away. Was this an unmarked area, was he just unlucky, or are all of these others just crazy.

My thoughts exactly, I have another picture with 30+ truck’s parked side by side. The ice was over 17″ but the truck broke through on a pressure ridge. They told us when we went on to make sure to use the bridge and DO NOT cross the pressure ridge any where else. We took the four wheelers any ways(still used the bridge). A lot safer.

Did this person try to cross where there was no bridge?

Where is the “ridge” relative to where the truck is being pulled up? Just curious….

The pressure ridge is where the truck went through, there was a bridge about another 1/2 mile out. My understanding is that the truck broke through but before they could get it out it went down. They took it out about 15 feet from where it went in. I still won’t travel with my truck! Track’s also show that the pressure ridge had been crossed before with out the bridge, I think the cold just made it unstable.

How many of these vehicles that went through were off roading? I guess I am just curious if any of them were practicing what we consider “guidelines” when it comes to ice travel. Anybody know??

Are they following a staked road from a resort, crossing the major cracks at a bridge, and fishing the in-shore areas (unless they hop on an atv from there)?
