So what are the Mille Lacs veterans thinking for opener with less than 3 weeks to go…leeches? Minnows? Shallow rocks? Sand? Deep?
Last year on the gravel in 11-20 feet worked well for me…
Also, any thoughts on a favorite line weight & color? Generally I like 6lb. green mono…

Well I agree with you on the green 6lb mono! as far as the bite goes I kind of wonder how it will be? The winter on Mille Lacs was DEAD. I’m hoping we have some luck on the opener and will it depend how the lake water temp. warms up.
I like to fish the rocks early morning and evenings. The mid-day I fish the northend sand breaks. Leeches will be my bait of choice……….

Well the test and tribal nets are sure showing up some nice fish next to shore. I like to start out at mid-night pulling cranks. I will drag leeches the next day and fish Sat evening with bobbers and spot-tail shiners and then pull cranks again. I like 6 pound P-line or Fusion 8/12

We will start with leeches and crawlers. At last light we will cast shallows with rapalas.Good luck to all on opener.

I’ll be on a favorite east side rock pile at midnight watching a lighted slip bobber slide under the water….

After a few hours of that, and when the lake clears out a bit I will switch over to trolling shad raps till the sun comes up.

Then it’s over to Macs for breakfast then crash for a few hours and do it all over again!
