I took these pictures this morning of two boats that picked thier nets just out front of my home. The natives were laughing as they pulled in their nets as they were FULL of walleyes. I’m not trying to make trouble here…….just sharing some of my many years of frustrations trying to understand.

I just received a call from a neighbor that was watching the Natives out front this morning. She said she was counting the fish in the one net that they were picking and she quit counting at 65 fish. She quit when they got behind the bank on the shoreline and see could’nt see anymore, they had more to go………

OUCH….man Bobber this is something that I think I’d rather just hear about, it’s a cryin same to see that alumacraft so low in the water….boy they either have a ton of fish or those three guys need to talk to Jenny Craig. My guess is they are excedding the boats rated limits and I’m not sure if any boat company or the cost guard put a fish rated limit on the boats. This stuff happens here on Winnie, but just minor compared to that. I agree with JoJo, how do you watch this day-in and out with out going crazy. Well thanks for the pics, boy its hard to understand though….What ever happened to the Birch Canoes?

It always amazes me every spring how the self annointed “conservators of the lands” can rape a species during their spawning season and be so proud of it.

And i’ve been refered to as a meat hog for keeping a couple fish!

I dont kow how you can handle watching this day after day!!! I wont say much on this or I could get arrested!! The natives trap a few waleyes on Leech every year as well but nothing like the picture of that Alumacraft or the degrees that they net on Mille Lacs.

I can’t even respond to this.
Well I could but I am afraid I would burn out the censorship option for the site.

I would like to share something that I have just learned. Did you folks know that the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission Personel (GLIFWC) are doing the Walleye tagging here on Mille Lacs along with our DNR. And that some of these same Natives of GLIFWC are here doing thier tribal netting also!
This spring is the first time the Natives have set nets on our shoreline here by our home. Last spring we had a conversation with them when they were in our boat harbor here releasing fish after tagging them. They stated that they really hit the jack pot here with good numbers of fish……funny that they can locate fish with thier shocking method for tagging and later come back and net the same fish?
Joe Fellegy talked about this in his Outdoor News article a few weeks ago. I think that the word is going to get out on this subject soon I hope. People need to know what is going on here……..

I am a student at the University of Minnesota. I am in a class called the history and culture of the ojibwe indians. Today we talked about treaty rights. Our teacher, who is an Ojibwe indian, had a lot to say about them. The first thing he talked about was spearing and netting on Mille Lacs. He said that “Indians take 6% of the fish from the lake each year, while tourists take a much larger number.” I am not sure, but aren’t the indians alloted about 1/4 of the total harvest this year? I also noticed that he neglected to say how they harvest their fish during the spawning season. There is a reason that sportsman have fishing seasons. We do not want to harvest spawning fish. He also told the class that “every fish caught is measured, counted, and its sex is determined.” Then he went on to say that sportsman do not have to do this and the restrictions on the indians are way tighter. At this point in the lecture I wanted to pipe up and say something. I held back though because he started comparing anti-spearing groups to the KKK. He said that they are just filled with hate. He told everyone about some pretty extreme cases of hatred regarding their spearing. He also told us that GLIFWC is just an public relations group for the indians.

After his whole lecture, the thing I was so suprised at was how close minded and misinformed he is. All he sees is that they have rights and they are going to use them.

I just thought everyone would be interested in hearing this and I needed to vent a little frustration.

Well yes they do have rights and so do we. Thats the problem. We want equal rights for everyone not just the natives. I dont have a problem sharing the resource if they want to put back in like we do. I guess he failed to mention that one too.

I’m glad to hear the good judgement you used considering the situation. The U of M is well known for its Liberal bias. I would bet if you had questioned anything said by him you would of been branded a racist or it could of reflected poorly on your grade in the class.
One of the biggest problems this country faces today with higher education is the fact that you are dictated to as to how to think, instead of being taught to think for yourself!
The Professors that impress me the most are those that prepare students for real life situations, in other words those that throw you a curve every once in awhile to see how you deal with it. Thats Teaching!!!

No I believe he is wrong with the Natives taking 6% of the take here in Mille Lacs. This year they plan to take 125,000 lbs of Walleye. Our yearly catch, including est.on mortality from CPR is 525,000 lbs I believe?

Did he mention the fact that a Native fishing Mille Lacs can fish on open water with two lines, fish with no slot limit, and can keep 10 walleyes a day……….

Also be carefull while driving around the Grand Casino on the Reservation, the Natives are not required to carry insurance on their auto’s on Reservation Land!!!!!!!!!
