Mille Lacs Report

Well this is a couple days late but I wanted to get the pics developed.

The plans were to head up to Mille Lacs Sat and get some fishing in….my buddy Kyle and I met at the truck stop in Rogers at 5:30 and off we went. Most of the drive up was discussing how long it had been since the 2 of us actually got to fish together…just the 2 of us. We hemmed and hawed the game plan and in the end we decided to fish the SW rocks for 2 reasons. Meleens “hot bite board” said the rocks were going and we weree slightly limited on time so that gave us extra time on the ice.

Knowing the winter we have had we wanted to go through a resort to make sure we got the latest info on the ice so we headed to Rocky Reef to talk to the Rockman. Rockman gave us the scoop on the ice and the bite so off we went H2Os in hand.
Hit the first spot drilled numerous holes from 17 – 24 feet of water…bounced around a little marked a few fish but no takers. After a short stint in this spot we consulted the H2Os with the Mille Lacs chip looking for likely ambush spots in the many rock reefs. We checked out a couple good looking spots but found other fishermen on them already so we scanned through the map on the GPS again and found a finger off one of the many rock reefs there on the SW that looked to have a steeper break than anything else in the area.
We got to the spot and found we had it COMPLETELY to ourselves.
Kyle started punching holes as I followed him with the Marcum to get the lay of the land we were excited to see that I was marking fish in about every 4th hole after punching a nice spread of holes we got to fishin. It didn’t take Kyle long to connect on the first eater a nice 18 inch fish. Then he connected on a 12 incher that went back, then a 25 incher, then another 17″ eater. At this point I am starting to wonder if he dipped my glo devil in the auger gas. I was just starting to think it was a fluke and then he struck again AND AGAIN.

He is having a ball, I am taking pictures wondering what I did wrong that morning to deserve this kind of abuse.

FINALLY I got in the game with an 18″ folled by a couple just over 22″ one looked like it had just eaten a football it was so fat.

It was approaching time for us to head off the lake, we had just experienced a lull for about an hour with nothing and we were sitting at 6 fish about 3 we are about ready to call it but neither of us is quite ready so without saying another word about leaving…we stuck it out just a little longer….good call in the next half hour we caught 4 more fish. Kyle got the first eater #7, then pulled up a maybe 14.5″ incher should we keep it and call it a day…..naaa….good thing…not 5 minutes later we doubled up on 18″ fish…slid one back down the hole for another day and tossed #8 in the bucket, a hand shake and a pat on the back for a GREAT day on Mille Lacs with a great friend!!!

All said and done we ended up catching 19 walleyes and 4 small perch.

We focused on a finger of the rock reef we were fishing, we drilled just over 40 holes along the break from 17′ to 28′ to cover as much water as possible but the vast majority of the fish came in that 19-21′ range.
We just kept hole hopping all day long.

Scenic Tackle glo devils in Firetiger was all they would touch, I tried a couple other presentations just to see….nothin doin. The key…as always ice fishing is to get them to chase. We had numerous fish come in look, leave come back look again leave and finally leave for good or pop the spoon. We had a couple…..saw the mark on the Marcum started raising the spoon and WHAM….had to be realy hangin on to the rod tight they hit so hard.

I am hoping to make it back up this Sat again, the Brat has a wedding shower to attend so I am FREE!!!!!!

    Nice job Buckshot,
next time that happens, borrow his rod for an hour, and see if that makes any difference.

That 22 is amazing. I love it when we catch those low 20’s fish that weigh close to 5lbs. If I didn’t have a B-day party for #1 I’d be going along this weekend.

What did you use at the hook end of the go-devils? A fathead head? Were you jigging or just letting it sit? How far out did you have to walk to get to the target FOW? Oh, and what day were you guys out?

It was a great day…the drive home was interesting Sat evening….downpour most of the way.

We just used a fathead minnow head.
We didn’t actually walk out we snowmobiled out. I think I ended up putting on a total of 4 miles for the day but we fished a different area first and ran around a little and checked a couple spots before ending up where we did.

I am not sure exactly how far out we were, it was cloudy and flat light so judging distance was tough….3/4 of a mile…maybe a mile….maybe a hair over…I honestly don’t know.
We didn’t see any foot traffic out as far as we were.
