I would guess, ONLY a guess, that the “new” ice is about 4-5 inches thick on the “main” lake with the rest of the ice out there being about 6-9 inches–meaning “main lake”.
I heard second hand that a plane (that flew over– 100ft. above my head)looked the whole lake over Sunday afternoon and saw “several” open patches of water. I DIDN’T hear where that was. I do know that there is an open patch out from Cove Bay, “out from the point”.
Although it has been 10 days since I saw open areas in many areas around the MAIN lake, we have had only about 2-3 nights of “ice making” weather since then. So—4-5 inches is my (only) guess. MOST of it will be at least 7-9″ out there by now. ALSO—changing temps/no snow makes the “crack” VERY active.
Just an FYI–I hear all the time that “the ice was really making noise, as it is MAKING ice”. Well….the ice makes as much noise if it IS NOT making ice as well. ANY temp change, makes ice either contract OR expand. Thus the noise! Snow free ice is louder and more prone to being noisy. In other words, as the sun comes up and into the morning, it will make noise as it is expanding and likewise, in the late afternoon/night, it is making noise as it contracts. ZERO relevance to “ice making”.
