What a Clown Night!! 6 and 7 Nov 06 Report

7 Nov was a foggy and and relatively windy day. 5-10 mph winds S or SE with 15 mph gusts, with light rain. Did not actually want to go out as it looked so pea souped, wet, windy. Waves were about 1 feet. Someone at Terry’s convinced me that it was worth going out. “I wouldn’t wait! (for the weather to change)” – was what he quipped.

So off we went into the wet and wind.

We started off in the late afternoon and within the first few minutes, we had a fish on!!

The catch became intermittent after that until about 10 pm when it really heated up till about 0200 hrs when we decided that it was really time to call it a night.

Total catch for that night was 13 fish. Largest was 26.5 inches.

Above is a chart showing the numbers of fish caught versus the lure used for the night of 7 Nov 06.

As you can see, the Clown HJ #12 was the lure of the night. As we had only one and my wife had it on her rod most of the night, she did most of the catching. However, the biggest fish of the night, a 26.5 incher, was caught by the man, with a firetiger HJ #12.

Trolling speed with trolling motor was 1.1 mph. We trolled between 4 to 8 FOW. Rods in hand.

We did not do so well on the night before on the 6 Nov 06. Only got a total of 5 fish fishing from 7 pm or so till about 0130 hrs. So sleepy as there was a paucity of action. Water temp on 6 Nov was 38 deg and on 7 Nov was 39+ deg. Also, it turned out, as the night wore on on the 7 Nov 06, the fog, wind and rain actually let up and turned out to be one of the most beautiful nights on the lake. The air temperature actually warmed up during the night itself to the point that I nearly wanted to take off my fishing jacket as I was starting to feel warm. The clouds started to disappear, the nearly full moon came out, the lake settled down, and oh…it was beautiful in the moonlight. Calm lake, warm weather, no rain, moonlight, and action on the rods. What more can we ask from Mille Lacs in November?? I was glad we actually went out. Thanks, Stranger!!

OK, this is where I need some help. What we noticed about this trip was that we were getting a lot of hits on our lures. I am not talking about getting weeds or hitting the bottom kind of hits, but definite fish hits. I think we had just as many fish hits as we had fish boated. Just as quickly as the fish hits, it would be gone from the hook. It felt like the fish was on for a second or two and then gone! We really could not figure why this was happening. This did not happen to us the last time out. I wondered if it was due to us striking too early, or striking too late, or was it due to the trolling speed, or was it just the fish behaviour. Any help or expert opinion on this would be greatly appreciated.

In any case, just to finish up the report, I do not think that we have as hot a pattern this time round. I met a boat that had caught 18 fish out in a weed patch at 8-10 FOW, trolling at 1.5 mph. They were using silver HJ and silver blue HJ. They said that the silver blue HJ trounced the silver HJ for that night. Their biggest was also around 26-27 inches. We also met two other boats that at about 1 am on 7 Nov 06, one of them still had the skunk in the cooler and the other only had one on. We helped them by telling them what baits to use and FOW to troll as we passed. Hoped they managed to get some by the time they left.

For chart junkies, here is one showing total inches of fish caught versus lure for 7 Nov 06 only.

And this is the total inches of fish caught versus lure over both days! OK, we know that this is quite biased depending on what lures we actually use and how long we use it. But I think there is no way that I could be bothered to take note of the time and duration each lure was used.

In any case, the clown more than out did the other lures by at least 2 times. NOTE : The use of Clown HJ has been due to earlier reports by James Holst and other forum posters.

Here is a table showing the times, size of fish, and lures caught on. As you can see, we were getting them real hot from 10 pm to about 2 am (yellow highlight). Fish on every 10-15 minutes.

What a night last night was. That weather was unbeleivable. A little drizzle at first and then just a great night after that.
When the moon was out last night they seemd to be all over FT husky jerks for us. When the clouds moved in it was just hit and miss. We must of had close to 25 last night. Over half where skippers. Must of lost atleast that many also. We tryed thinking our way threw this delima and what we came up with is that the fish are just smarter than us. Just one of those nights.
Anouther big key to catching fish last night was lots of turns with the boat. I would think 95% of our fish came on the inside rod of a turn. Dropping the rod tips during the turn so the lures would stop in the water helped to. It got to a point last night that we where just taking turns catching fish depending on which way the boat was turning.

Good luck to you guys getting out tonight.

All fish measured on Hawg board as per regs. Here is a 25 incher from the colder night of 6 Nov.

A 21 incher on the hawg board. Very nice tool for measuring fish. Cradles it and passed the conservation officers test. They checked us on the night of 6 Nov. We had a 21 incher in the livewell then.

Where were u guys fishing?? My firetiger this time round was not so hot. Wonder why? However, I am sure, fishing the area that we were in, if I had a second Clown, we might have 20 fish or more. Hehe.

Very interesting report! I noticed a number of short or missed strikes at the bait like you mentioned, too! What cured the problem for me was going from a #12 to a #14 size husky jerk, never missed a fish after that!

Ahhh…..well done. I would never have thought of going bigger. Thanks for the tip. But I wonder why? Could it be bigger bait, bigger crunch??

Great post! Love the charts and graphs! Good stuff. I’m glad to hear that other people are have the same issues with the fish hitting and gone. I thought it was the hooks/baits/line etc…

We usually get the short biters if it’s a very dark night.

I think they have a hard time zeroing in on the bait. They know its close so they take a hit at it.

I could see how a bigger lure would give them a better chance at hooking up.

I’ll have to try that next year.

Excellent theory!!!! I think you are right about that!!! That would explain it. Darn…you guys are geniuses. Now that means I gotta spend more money cos the #14 are more expensive than the #12.

Great report. I never thought of the smaller bait theory either, but it makes perfect sense to me.

Craig, you may be onto something. I have typically done better in those times with a “louder” bait, such as a rogue. Helps the fish zero in on the bait better. I’ll have to test this theory out tonight.

Bigger baits sometimes mean bigger fish with more teeth also!!!!!

Different sizes are good to try, at times they want a bigger bait, sometimes smaller…
HJ 12 vs 14, the one good thing between the two lures, the Trolling Bible does show both of these baits at the exact same depth, with the same line out..
There is more Fall fishing left for sure..

Being out the pond last Saturday night the 4th and again on the nights of the 7th and 8th the pattern I have seen is the larger 14 size has about 3 to 1 catch ratio over the 12’s. We have been mixing in a lot of sharp S turns and using the surge feature in the digital troll master. It seems any change in speed or direction triggers an aggressive reaction in these fish and they just hammer it.

If anyone needs a partner this weekend, let me know. My boat is in for service right now and I think I will not get it back until things are iced up.

Here is the style that works well for us. Again, same color schemes as the HJ’s. Earlier in the season Lazer Claw was the hot pattern.

Geniuses, not even close. If that were true I would have figured it out years ago.
