Got out on the Big lake today for the first time since Christmas. It was a nice day to be on the lake. There was very little wind. It was no problem to be outside without a fishhouse or heater. As you could see with Bobber’s previous report the lake is very wet. A lot of standing water an inch or two deep. You can get pretty much anywere on the lake with a 4-wheeler or Truck. You just have to keep an eye out for the snowdrifts from where fishhouses used to be and drifts from previously plowed roads.

Between two of us, we got 16 good sized perch for a morning of fishing. A couple of them were over a pound. We got them in anywhere from 30 to 34 feet of water. The fish were not biting very aggressively. Half of the time they wouldn’t even take the bobber down or you could hold the rod steady and they would come bite on your bait and you wouldn’t know they were on till you lifted the rod up. Most of the fish were caught on a plain hook and a crappie minnow or a small glow in the dark jig and a hellgrammite.

All in all it was a very nice day on the lake, I even got a little bit of a sunburn from the sun that was shining through the clouds. From this warm weather, I can only think of spring and open water!!!!

Hey Josh glad to hear you caught some fish! I was thinking about you when I looked out at the fog Saturday morning.

I noticed you mentioned that you used a Helgermite as bite on your hook. I had someone ask me the other day about what a helgermite looked like. Below a have attached a picture of one that a perch spit up.

yeah it was a nice day out on the lake thats for sure. You should have been out there!! The only problem was the fog. I couldn’t see past 30 yards till 10am and could only see a couple hundred yards by noon. But I can’t really complain about the fog because I was on the lake fishing!!

I’ll probobly be up before I head back up to school so I’ll stop by and maybe we could head out for a day or two on the lake.
