Anyone interested in predicting ice out on the big pond this spring? I thought it might be fun to see what some might guess for a date here?

    I’ll start with April 27th……..

I also feel a warming trend…..I’ll say April 20th. An Easter Sunday ice out.

Who’s date are we going to consider official? How about the date published in the Mille Lacs Messenger? They do it every year….

If it can warm up a little, and with as windy as it has seemed to be this year, I’ll go with April 18.

It’s hard to believe a tree can survive that shoreline! Simply amazing! I know not of what I speak (what else is new???) but I’ll throw down a chip for April 22nd. I don’t recall seeing a claim on that one but if I’m mistaken, just gimme a slap and I’ll figure out a new one!

bobber, where was that picture taken? that picture has my wife worried, we just moved to the puddle last oct. we are on cove bay next to bayview so we should be out of harms way because we are far enough behind the point. may 5th sounds like a good guess to me.

Correct me If I am wrong Bob. But I think it was taken on the east side, about 3 blocks south of the once LakeSide resort on the point out of the harbor.
    Did I win anything?

Quite the picture Bobber! That sures give a guy the willies looking at that much ice and what kind of power that ice has once mother nature decides its time to blow.

Did anyone have any casualites to there homes and nearby equipment?

It has in the past done some damage, some years back it did some damage at Izatys prior to the new condos there. There is a concern with any home that is built close to the lake. Our home here is 78 feet from the water. The picture posted prior was taken two places south of ours here on the point.
It can happen as quickly as a few minutes. It took only 20 minutes to do this damage!
It’s best when the lake opens with the LEAST winds. I don’t care for strong west winds. And the ice needs to become honeyconed. It does the least damage in that state. When it comes in early, it can do some damage.

I have pictures that I took at Izaty’s when the cabins were moved by the ice. My scanner died so I can’t do any posting of what I have. It is quite a sight.

Hey Dino….how many years ago was that? I remember driving over to see the damage and seeing the ice in the cabins. I think they have only one of the original stone faced cabins left.
