Well after getting back from my first Mille Lacs Lake trip, I have to say that I will be making MANY more trips in the future. We arrived at Eddy’s Hotel on Friday around two in the afternoon and unloaded the truck and got the boat ready. We headed out on the big lake around 3:30. We tried slipbobbering a shallow rock point for a while with no success. About an hour before sunset we started trolling cranks over the top of the point. Withing the first hour we had two 26.75 inchers, one came on a clown husky jerk and the other came on a SUPER shad rap. I doubted that lure would catch ANYTHING, but one of my partners proved me wrong. About an hour after sunset we decided to move to try some new spots. None of those spots panned out so after another hour we moved back to our original spot but tried the other side of the point. On this side of the point there was a very wide shallow shelf that extended out about 300 yards into the lake, and it made boat control much easier. We picked up two nice eaters on this part before moving onto another spot. Our last spot of the night put out another nice eater, and at about 11:00, we called it night. The next day we fished perch for a while, catching a few very nice jumbos, and then trailered back to Eddy’s to fish walleyes. We fished a few new spots until just before sunset, and then with nothing to show for it, moved back to our shallow point. Our first fish was 21.5, followed by a 25 and 27. Then Josh, who had just caught his biggest walleye a half-hour before (21.5), crushed his record with a 26.25. After a good hour things slowed, with only one nice fish lost and another eater coming to the boat. We stopped fishing around 9, having the drive back to Zumbrota still ahead of us. Our three best colors for this night were clown, firetiger, and black-orange. All of our fish came out of 3.5-6 feet of water. All in all it was fun trip, and I learned a lot about night trolling and the big lake. I can’t wait to go back, maybe this fall again and for sure a lot next summer. Thanks to everyone who gave me info before this trip. Good luck to all heading up. I’m gonna try and post a pics from the trip.
