I got up to the pond this last weekend for the first time since Oct 25th. The shack we rented was just off Flamingo reef in 22′ of water. the bottom appeared to mud, but must have been sand because bouncing a jig didn’t stir up the bottom like it does out in the mud. I got to see lot of nice fish on the camera, but we only had one taker. It came on a gem-n-eye with a large shiner. We didn’t see any jumbos, but I don’t think we were in the right area for them either. I didn’t get a picture of the 22-23″ eye we caught because the batteries were dead in the camera.

We had one weird bite, one of the guys reeled up his rattle reel so the shiner was just below the ice so he could try and jig a little. He was pretty much sleeping when his rattle reel took off. He grabbed the line, set the hook and snap…nothing. I’m assuming it must have been a muskie or pike that high in the water column. What do you guys think??

It amazes me how the bite has changed since Oct. The fishing was slow, but the card playin’ and beer made up for the lull. I can certainly see why the fish aren’t biting though. We had tiny perch in front of the camera all day long.

Well, I had a tough fall. All I’m hearing is how tough the hard water season is. We’ve all seen a billion little perch. It is probably all shaping up to be a tough spring and summer bite on the big pond. Last year was so incredible, I’m probably due for a couple tough years on Mille Lacs – I’m OK with that!
