I’ll be making my first trip to Mille Lacs in January, I’m going with a buddy of mine who’s fished up there a couple times before, any advice on what to use? I’m interested in catching anything, I’m not really into panfish, but I know that my buddy is. I’m more interested in Bass, northerns, and walleye, and I would love to catch some eelpout.

    thanks

I fish on Mille Lacs through Agate Bay Resort typically and we usually fish on the top of the reef there or on the deep side of the reef for walleyes. I like to use Swedish pimples, Do-Jiggers and JB Weasels and actively moving around and jigging. This is ussually a pretty good combo and yields nice catches most days. I will then set a Tip up on the top of the reef with a 5-7 inch sucker minnow to keep perch and small fish away. Then when it goes it normally is a good fish, however, jigging for me outfishes the tip-up at least 10-1. I prefer jig colors like silver-chart, silver-blue, or glow colors. Usually if you use a depth finder jigging 2-3 feet off bottom seems to work best ( If you can get them to rise up for the bait you can ussually count on getting bit). On days when fish will not rise down size your offering and and jig less aggressive. If Eel pout is your target- GO GLOW…and jig on the bottom to a foot up and lett your bait hit bottom and raise it to hold just off bottom then snap it and let it fall again pausing ussually for 3-4 seconds…Hope this helps some and you have good success….let us know
