I did fish the North end last night….Nothing on the north end…all fish we caught ( 4 walleyes and 1 rock bass and 1 smallie) were caught on the Nw side!!!! The weeds are still very strong and green…however the water temp did read below 60 degrees….Its only going to get better from here!!!
This is the most wonderful time of the year to be fishing….don’t be upset if you make a trip to mille lacs and don’t “crush” the fish. That is why they call it fishing…Its still tough right now, but don’t loose faith, change your presentation, move around and hold on!!!
Good luck and be sure to report how you do!!!

    Just an “FYI”.

I went out of Red Door on a day trip yesterday (Wednesday the 20th)and found the water out in the lake (the first 100yds.) to be almost impossible to get through. With waves, I doubt one can get over the sand bars. In flat water, I was stuck with my 1800 ProV.

As usual, it was just fine. With a 91 year old and 86 year old, we had a nice limit in 2 hours and 15 minutes. Bobbers and leeches. Even in the calmer conditions.

Yup. Very specific “spots”…the size of two boats or so…or maybe your living room size. One other boat fished around us and had zero bites the whole time.

This is one of the harder areas on the lake to fish successfully and consistently at this time of year as it is soooo spot specific. I think bigger reef areas such as the eastside marked reefs or the sw side marked reefs are much easier.

Thanks for the reply on the Red Door Steve. Looks like i need to try and get out in a new area for me. I fished up there a couple of times last fall and really caught some “BIG” fish right out in front of the Red Door resort.

Trolled the rocks on the north end last night. It was slow but we did manage to pick up a few decent fish. Picked up two 22.5 and a nice 27.5″ walleye. Water temps where running just a little over 56 degrees. Slow trolling stick baits and shallow shad raps.

The bite still seems to be alot slower than last year but for some reason I have a feeling it is going to break loose very soon. Still cant complain about what we have been getting into this fall. My last 3 trips out we havent caught a fish under 22″s and last night a very quiet and peaceful night on the lake.

How did the rest of you guys do this weekend?

Will be back on either the north end or nw side tonight. Front seat is open if someone wants to get out for awhile.

Mike, we had about the same thing going. Fished Rock/weeds until 1:30am with 5 going from 20.5 to 23 with a 34 inch Pike. Missed a couple, including my first fish, forgot to check my drag….rookie mistake. How about the Northern lights. Pretty cool from what we could see of them. Beautiful night to be out indeed. We expected the worse and had very pleasant conditions.

The lights were SPECTACULAR! I made the comment about “Since when did the moon rise in the north! And here it was the Northern Lights, WOW!
We ended up with a few fish last night on the east rocks, but it was slow over all for us.

Hi guys. Drewsdad and I got out last night from 4:00 pm until 9:30 PM. Fish two reefs with slipbobbers with no luck until dark. Switched up to trolling in 6-8 FOW at sunset. We picked up three walleyes (10″, 17″, 24″) until the wife-mandated get-off-the-water time of 9:00 PM was reached. We picked up all of our fish in areas where the 5′-6′ depths transitioned quickly into 10’+ depths. The fish were right on the edge as we dragged off the shelf.

Not bad for my second time fishing Mille Lacs ever…Without this forum and Drewsdad’s inspiration, I would be very intimidated by that lake.

Now we just got to find a way to get Drewsdad onto more fish…I’ve had most of the beginner’s luck. He kept talking about grouse and pheasant hunting in October instead of walleye fishing on the way home.

Hey Lip-Ripper, thanks for the comments last week as well as the report a couple weeks ago…they were a big help.

For those who fished the north end, i was just wondering where you launched from. I am also looking at the north side this weekend but it looks like i can not get out at the Red Door resort from the post that Steve sent out.
    Thanks for any info.

I am very inspirational. People look at what I do and say to themselves, “I can do better than that!”

I guess I need to get some shallow shad raps. I got about 200 crankbaits. But not a single stinkin’ shallow shad rap.

Nice job on the fish last night Marty!

There were boats that got through the sand at Red Door the past few days. I doubt it was without trouble, especially early in the weekend with the waves roaring in there. I put in at Barnevelds and had to deal with only a short sand bar the first 30 ft. in front of the harbor mouth. I don’t like the ramp there as it is a weird angle for loading the boat. The Red Door ramp is best in that neighborhood BUT—??.

The Myr Mar ramp is the only one without any major issues on the north end for now.

Steve, what is the name of that resort just west of Red Door and Barnicle’s, which was just purchased by new owners early this year? I know they have a pretty steep ramp. I met some buddies there on opener and camped there on Saturday and the sign had the old name on it, so we called every one on the cell phones and told them to meet us there on Sunday. As we waited and waited on Sunday, we began to wonder if everybody was lost… someone showed up and started yelling that we gave them the wrong resort, Man! no one calls me a liar, so we walked up to the house and she verified that the sign had been changed that morning! We all almost fell over laughing. Anyways it looks like she was redoing the whole septic system, the marina had all new docks, and it looked like she was doing some nice things. If you know the new name and the old so I can find the phone number and see if they are up for some fall camping. Thank you

Funny—when you have a history of being at the lake when many of the resorts and homeowners first started there, you call all the places by their ORIGINAL namesake.

Bob is right about the NEW name being “Doc’s Harbor” but that said….I would have said meet me at “Kamp Diffrent”. (yes–spelled THAT way!) It will always be Kamp Diffrent with us!lol

Doc’s is now one of the best harbors on the lake by design and up-keep but it too, is too shallow out in the lake to get out with waves coming in. Our old place, now known as Ray’s Boat Dock is too shallow as well. (that’s all I will say about the old place.lol)

Yep, I willl need plenty of : that week. I had a pretty good streak last year of being on the lake during the week. Never took a day off, just would fish a night, work all day fish again, work and then all the next night.

    Man I can’t wait.

Yep! you guys are right that the new name is Doc’s, Due to the heavy rain on opening weekend we were unable to drive RV’s down the approach leading into my brothers property, so the first group found a campsite at Doc’s, they were very nice and you could see the improvements coming along. That was one of the best openers we have had in a few years, and our crew won the resort contest. Easy to do when your limit contains a 19 7/8ths fish, along with a couple of 19 1/2 made for a great fish fry every day.

Stuart. I made it out of red door saturday night with mid sized boat. Sounds like Steve had some problems with a bigger boat. Would not even try it with any waves blowing in there.

Look at the ramp report in this forum for lots of good info on ramps. Myr mar might be a good option. Pikes point or N garrison may work also. Forget about wealthwood or malmo public landings.
    Hope this helps.

That ramp isnt the issue, its the main lake outside of the marina..
