The bite has actually improved from an already good bite from the sounds of this last report sent to us by James Holst and the numerous pictures included back that up.

Here’s the link to that latest report –

as well as a photo from James’ Friday night trip with John “waterfowler” Kutz and Daryl Henry, both regulars here on FTL, that ended with a DOUBLE, shown here in the photo. Nice photo guys. Looks like a great time.

I was waiting for James to post this pic…. We boated 55 fish last Friday night. In my opinion, the conditions couldn’t have been much tougher. The area we were fishing had no wind, the sky was as dark as it could get and the fish were shallow. I figured we were going to have a tough bite. Boy was I wrong.

We started the evening trolling craw color husky jerks and rogues with a firetiger husky on the third line. In the first hour we boated 3 fish, all in the 22-24″ range. James said we would likely see a slow down, until the moon was high above, if the trends from nights past continued. Well, the fish gods must have been working OT that night.

I don’t remember going more than 30 minutes without catching a fish. As a matter a fact, I don’t think we went 15. If you do the math, 11 hours, 55 fish, that’s one every 12 minutes, which isn’t far off. If I had to guess, we had close to 10 doubles, with a very close triple. I was just tossing my fish over the side when both James and Darryle hooked up.

If you’ve never experienced an evening(night) on the water with James, I highly recommend it. I learned some subtle techiniques that should help my fishing considerably. BTW, Darryle does have the biggest of the two fish on that last double, which was par for the course that evening. I hook up, 23″, Darryle hooks up, 26″. I guess I was on the wrong side of the boat that evening. I think Darryle had 10 fish or better in the 26″ range, with one just shy of 28″. Now that was a nice fish. I’ll post some pics as soon as I get them developed.

I’ll see you next fall James!! Thanks for an amazing trip!!!

Spent last night up on Mille Lacs pulling the Indian Point area and my buddy got hot with his Pro-Bomber 15A crank. We were pulling up to 1.0 mph over top of standing cabbage weeds. The clumps of weeds that we found to be higher off the bottom seem to attract more baitfish and in turn tended to pull more fish from these areas or just inside these areas. No giants last night but plenty of fish up to 26 inches was the norm for him.

Several times I put the kicker motor in neutral for a solid 2-3 minutes and just held the rod motionless and you would feel just the lightest of “ticks” with an eye on the other end.

Water temp was 39 degrees from my boat.

For the most part, I am headed back to river with an ocassional “spurt of the moment” trip to Mille Lacs before freeze up………hmmmm maybe tonight?
