My trip to Montana Antelope hunting was a blast. What I got out of the trip was nothing short of spectacular! I did not shoot one myself but a few of our group did score bucks. There were plenty of opportunities to shoot baldies but we were looking for horns.
I had never drove much west of the Minnesota-North Dakota border myself so the scenery in western North Dakota and eastern Montana was something I’d never seen before. I can say it was country you would have to love, as it was obvious that it would not be for everyone. This is a hard barren country that must be tough to navigate when wet, and unforgiving when your in the dead of winter.
We drove through the Painted Canyons of North Dakota as well as traveling by truck and foot through many beautiful hills and buttes in Montana. It will quickly make you understand why they sometimes refer to it as “Big Sky” country as it’s a long ways between points of civilization.
There were many Mule Deer and Sage Grouse encounters and my cousin John even saw a Jack Rabbit, fortunately the rattlesnakes were nowhere to be seen.
I went out there with my Dad and cousin John, where we met up with another of my cousins Chuck, John’s older brother, and 4 of his buddies, John, Kip, Pete and Joe Mama, who all live a ways north of Yellowstone in western Montana.
The Ranch we stayed on consisted of about 90 sections (90 sq. miles) and our hosts Tom and Nancy Horn, were very nice people, we even talked them into coming out for a fish fry Thursday evening (the Minnesota connections night to cook).
We had great weather, no rain or snow to speak of and everyone went home safe.
I really enjoyed this chance to get away for a break, as this was my only real vacation of the year.
Every evening for us was like you see in the attached picture.
