I am going to take my son up to Mille Lacs for his first Walleye outing….my first trip to Mille Lacs also. I have heard of great reviews of this lake and I figured if we are going to try for the Walleyes this would be the place to try. With my new job, my time on the lakes this year has been limited. So if anyone has some pointers or tricks of the trade please send them my way. Your time is greatly appreciated.

P.S. my son is young…he has patience with panfishing so I am testing the water so to speak.

    Brian,

Give us a little more info. Size of boat/motor? GPS? Do you have any experience on big water? (Mille Lacs can kick up some huge rollers) Are you set up to troll cranks?

Fishing perch right now might be a option if you need to find some action for him.

Slip bobber fishing is good right now on the rocks. You’ll get some walleyes and perch mixed in. Slip bobber fishing usually keeps kids interested as they can see the bite..

My cousin is going to be loaning me his boat: 185 Crest fishhawk lowrance gps (model?) it does have a chip if this helps trolling motor ap70? and a 115hp main motor. A few years ago when i had a boat i visited LOTW quite often and this lake could rear it’s ugly head too!

Trolling with him is questionable. I have heard when trolling cranks you’ll get snagged in the rocks on Mille Lacs. Our fishing outing might be cut short without any rods. I just want to keep him fairly busy, i have alot more patience than him. He has taken a liking to the outdoors, and I want to keep feeding that desire.

How deep are the rocks you are talking about?

Thanks to everyone who replied! Thanks to work, I will be delayed getting my son out til next weekend. BUT I am sure the tips I was given will help us boat some fish! If anything changes in the fish activity please let me know.

    Thanks again!!!
