Oh, there’s nothing wrong with the boat itself, it’s all the YOY perch that end up tossed around the inside of my boat when we land fish each night. The forage shortage is over…. in fact, there’s such an over-abundance right now I think that is contributing to slower fishing for some. The walleyes are literally swelling noticeably over the period of the last week and many look to me to be as heavy as pre-spawn river females! And I am NOT kidding. Go fish, you’ll see.
Case in point is the following pic, provided to help you stay on that diet (lol)… as well as get a feel for how much food is available to these fish right now.
This “mess of perch” was left by ONE 22″ fish. She got scooped in the net, set down on the back platform… and she proceeded to leave the following pile of 12 YOY perch in various stages of digestion. And she still looked like a balloon set to explode!
The 22″ – 26″ fish are showing the most rapid gains in mass and the larger 27″+ fish are right on their heels. I’m assuming the larger fish, which do look great but don’t quite have that bloated look yet, take longer to fill out than the smaller fish. If this trend continues, by October we’ll be catching lots of truely heavy specimens…. if you can figure out how to make them bite that is…lol
