Just got home from a day on the water with IDA member “500”. We started the day trolling Salmo Hornets and these baits keep impressing me every time I use them. They have a vibration like no other crank bait I have used and they run true 100% of the time. We caught some nice jumbos on #4 Pink Tiger and the Hot Perch. But the trolling bite was sporadic. The key today was staying on the shallow rocks and using the electric to control drift with slip bobbers. We ended up with 6 walleyes from 16-23 inches, 25 + perch, and 5-6 tiny 3-4 inch smallmouth which is good sign that there will be a good year class in the years to come.

I cant reveal the live bait we used with the slip bobbers due to an up coming tourney next weekend. All I can say it wasnt something any walleye angler would normally use.

No pics for this trip. My fancy digital SLR broke on me last week.

Hey Derek, nice little update!! I had planned to fish some this weekend, but other things got in the way Good luck up at Phil’s next weekend! should be a fun time had by all!!
I’ll be packing for MTT championship on LOW…..need to get all my gear ready as we are leaving on the following Saturday and I have no other time to get it done. We are going for a week, so I know I’ll be bringing way too much stuff………oh well ya got to be prepared

Just a note on what I’ve heard around the pond! the bobber bite is starting to come around on the shallow rocks. The reefs out front looked like Memorial weekend and not Labor Day weekend the last few evenings. Lot’s of people out ejoying a dry weekend on Mille Lacs! we have had no rain all weekend. It has stayed to the west and south of this area. The leech supply is starting to get small, as it does this time of year, If you are planning a trip to the pond, make a few stops along the way to make sure you have bait!! some bait shops might be low or out of leeches

    Derek,
It was fun fishing with you yesterday. Thanks for not disclosing the “hot” bait. Feel free to tell them on Sunday. The bait and Hornet pattern should hold on here on out. However, the Sting will take over more as we head into the fall night bite

“500” MIGHT get a bite this weekend at Phil’s. My favorite wife and I plan on giving him and the others a big “sting”!lol
500? You’d better fish with your wife so ya gotta chance!

We’re hoping for flat glass water this weekend.

Well Steve, if you and 500 are both fishing it, I think I’ll just stay on shore!

    Hi Steve,
You’re right in that I should be fishing with my wife, but it’s a little tougher these days with the twins… I don’t think I met the misses yet. I’m sure we’ll see you either Fri or Sat. night. Yeah, I hope it’s dead calm too Or Rockin!
Good Luck to all that fish it.
And Jack, you should fish it too, if you’re not guiding. I did give a guy your name for guiding this weekend.

500 should have had baby-sitter for the twins —and fished with “Queen Bee”. Her “stinger” would have been much better on day two! lol (couldn’t resist!)

‘Course I’m still licking my wounds too–from day ones blunders.

Ah yes, that luck could have been much better with “Queen Bee.” LOL.

It’s been some incredible fishing the last couple of days not to mention the HOT summertime bite… One only wonders what the weights would be if there were no slots… Can you say 40 to 50 pound bags a day?
