Fall Pre-Dawn/dawn Trolling Bite?

Juggling jobs, kids, wives and hunting obligations (not necessarily in that order) my friends and I need to expand our options when we do get a chance to fish together. Is there also a pre dawn trolling bite? I’ve heard things slow down around midnight but do they pick up again towards morning light?

    Thank you for your input.

There is a good bite early in the mornings. Not always, but a few nights I’ve been able to muster the strength to power through a full night of fishing, it can be good as the sun is coming up. The hard part is staying on the breaks and weedlines as you are nodding off to sleep. Right James.

I in no doubt get my money’s worth when fishing with James. Each year him and I see the sun rise when we fish together. It’s that lull in the middle of the night that can be the most brutal.

I guess I have experienced some great bites after midnight. TLast year, Tuck and I boated 7 fish 24″ -27.5″ in a 45 miunte span and I beleive it happened around 12:30 – 1:15am. Also last year with James he found a school of some nice bigguns and that was around 2-3am. Bob, I would not count out late night stuff. Kooty, last year James and I got off the lake right before the sun came up but it slowed down and the temp was around 24 degrees. Talking about Brrrr…

Some of the best fishing I’ve had has been in those hours. Last year I had a nice run that started with a foul weathered night where I didn’t even get on the water until 2am or so (don’t ask) that night me and a partner boated 16 eyes between 24″-28″ with not one keeper. Followed that school in the wee hours of the morning for about 2 weeks with good success. Like Lip said though BURR!!

Two years ago my son and I were out for the Oct. full moon and he was kicking my butt so bad on 28″ walleyes I told him we weren’t going home until I caught a bigger fish then him. Finally around 4 the bigger fish turned on again and I caught a 30″ walleye so I said we can now go home. There is a lull around midnight sometimes but if you can say awake until early morning hours you can be rewarded.

1 – 3 AM is my favorite time to be on the lake.

James I remember a few years ago when we were out it was slow from 11 to 1 and then it was a blast with one big fish right after the other and we finally quit at 5. That night we had 54 walleyes which my son and I will never forget. Thanks agian for the memories.

Trust me, it was my pleasure to share the experience with you and your son.

James hope to see you again next week, we’ll be up on Wednesday night. Sold the Crestliner so look for a 175 TP Alumacraft tiller with a 90 Yamaha and T8.

    Good Luck,

I’ll be up last week in September with a film crew. We’re filming a night trolling video. Gonna plop down much of what I’ve learned up there over the last 10 years and commit it to DVD before I forget it all. Plus we’re going to pull in the knowledge of some of the other guys that know the game inside and out like DeZurik and Tuckner for their input as well.

We film on October 1, 2 and 3. If you see a really well lit boat… that’d be me.

I’ll keep my eyes peeled for you.

Last year I had the best bite I’ve ever seen on Mille Lacs pre-dawn. The fish were non-stop for about 2 hours before sunrise. The final two fish of the day were smallmouth as the sun came up.

Videos clips will be placed inside fishing reports. Much like you’ve seen the catfishing guys do lately.

This is going to be a fun shoot. I’ve got a crew coming with HD video equipment, underwater cameras and all the top-notch goodies. I’m hoping to have some very informative video clips to share as well as a feature length DVD for sale by Dec. 1.

Those video clips from the footage shot up there will be announced right here. There won’t be any way to miss them.
