I will be fishing Mille Lacs for Smallmouths this weekend. I have never fished the lake for smallmouth before and was wondering if anyone had any advice on where to go and what to do. We will be launching out of Wahkon Bay. Any info would be great. Thanks

I would look at any of the shallow reefs that are around or near the Islands on the south end of the lake. Look for the bouy markers and you will find the shallow rocks. The water in Mille Lacs is really dirty from all the rain fall we have had lately…….I would go with something with scent or that rattles…….The bigger rocks hold more fish.
Good luck, let us know here at FTL how you do…..

    Pherris,
Wow! I just fished Mille Lacs for smallies last weekend for the first time and launched out of Wahkon. I fished the islands and the rocks where the bouys are located using soft plastic crawdads, suspending jerk baits, shallow running cranks, and even some plastic worms. We caught 2 crawdads on our soft plastics (must have been a territorial thing?) so I thought we were in a good location, however, the only fish we caught was a 14″ walleye on the wind swept side of one of the rocky islands. The wind started getting nasty so we bailed after about 4 hours. I hope you have better luck! I’m interested in learning more about the smallies on Mille Lacs so if you hook into a few could you drop me a line or post how do did?
