First Time

I had the opportunity to show the “big” water to a FTR regular , Leinieman. This was his first time on the lake during the open water season , the only previous stops were during the ice season. We headed out from Big Point and decided to go to the gravel in the south central part of the lake. The wind was out of the south and we had 1″ to 2′ waves which were small compared to later in the day. The fish were eager to cooperate as they have been lately. Using spinners seemed to be the best and even with the drift sock out we had plenty of lure speed. What a day. Lienieman’s first summer fish was a beautiful 22″ golden walleye. We proceeded to catch 4 or 5 every drift with the largest a bit over 25″. During the day the wind ranged from a good breeze to a blast furnace with gusts that made the waves run over 4 feet. Because the day was a hot one it was refreshing to get wet. We spent close to 11 hours on the water before we waved the white flag and headed to shore for a well deserved dinner and beverages. We did go through close to a pound of leeches and a dozen or so crawlers. We even had a limit of slot fish to clean to top off the day.

It was good for Steve to see this lake at its best. I hope the bite will continue for a while longer.

I had my brother-in-law on the big pond Sunday. It was his first time on Mille Lacs. I was a little disappointed compared to my earlier trips this year but having a first timer along sure helped to put things into perspective. He caught a 27.5 incher and had a blast. He looked at me like I was nuts when I started switching up presentations when our catch rate dropped to “only” 1 fish per half hour.

How short could my memory be to actually get disappointed over “only” 22 walleyes including a biggun?

Being out on a centrally located flat (like 7 mile, 9 mile, or 8 mile) is one of my favorite walleye experiences. I still have strong memories of feeling like an ant out there when I was a kid. It was fun to share that with someone new to the lake.

Hey Dino, It wasn’t really my first summer fish but it was my first walleye on the big pond. Did those Pics turn out ok that I emailed you. They look good on my computer. I think if I remember right we had 65 for the day. Those were really nice walleyes. I haven’t ever caught that many nice ones in one day. If I can catch them it is a very good thing that they have a slot size because anyone can get them, Well at least if they have someone to take them out. Ever think of becoming a guide? Any time you need a partner to go out with let me know. It is only a three hour drive and I will get up at three AM anytime

Another walleye from the Big Pond. This one was caught the same day. Is that a little sun burn I see there. I too had a little burn going and peeled a few days later. Thanks for the great trip. It was great seeing you at the BB/BS and the get-together. Steve

One last photo. This one was of my first walleye on open water on the big pond. Dino you did a good job with the camera. That is sure some pretty water. If I sent a photo of Menomoin it would look like a lawn with waves.

What isn’t August 22 a full moon or how about September 21st?
If I remember right someone said it dosen’t have to be right on a full moon but a week or so on either side is good too. Now I’ve only been there once so for you regulars how about the scoop? I know there’s also one in November but Brrrr and that’s close to hunting season. Steve
