Hi All, was up to Mille Lac for the second time this year, sure do not want to sound like a broken record, but the fishing was pretty darn good. Wind was really blowing so did not want to go out up to the flats, some friends did and did well. The farthest I went was 5 mile, stayed mainly off the edges, our average fish was 22 – 23 inches. we used spinner rigs with leeches, would have liked to try some jigs but the wind was pushing us little too much to want to try it. Friends that went up to the flats caught more fish but their average did seem to be much better. also managed a few smallies in shallow rocks which was a blast, sure are strong fish. Jack.

    Jack,

Sounds like you had a ball. Yeah, she was blowing a little Saturday morning. How big were the smallies?
Spent last night up there out near the mud and ended the evening with close to 30 fish with a 29.5″ fish being the biggest with 6 fish between 27-28″. It was flat calm, a little sticky and real quiet as far as anglers go. THe sunset was awesome as well as the fishing was! IT is always so hard to leave the lake when they are biting after the sun goes down, but that early morning alarm clock comes far to early so I opted to leave by 10:30pm.
The forecast looks real nice for the holiday weekend for Mille Lacs lake. Winds to be 5-10mph.

    Enjoy!

Steve I envy you so much!! I wish I could make evening trips to the lake. I love the time, right at sunset when the wind dies down to nothing. It’s just a little too far from Eden Prairie though. I’ve got to be at work at 6:30 so makes for a short night the way it is.

I hear ya on the early mornings. I also work early am and I live about an hour from the lake. I usually have it out with the alarm clock every morning prior to a late night on the lake.
But, it is all worth it. I am sure my productivity fluctuates a little when I fish late, but gotta feed that addiction right?

Little fish flies were out in full force last night. These little pesky critters are just a tad smaller than a mosquito. Junior fish flies? No idea.

I have been without a boat for the last two weeks waiting for it to be reapaired from fiberglass damage from Lake Winnebago. I have been fortunate to have good friends to help me fuel my passion! Otherwise I would take up basket weaving or something off the wall like that! LOL!

Are you heading up this weekend as well?

No, it’s my weekend to work at Gander. I’ve also been feeding the addiction out of friends boats. I can’t wait until this fall so I can get my wife into a house. The boat will be the second mortgage right after the house. Next spring I’m going to owe a bunch of fish trips to my buddies, but I’ll be happy to pay them back.

hi Steve, the Smallies were a surprize, but I was fishing for them when I caught them. the biggest wasa 18 inches the a 15 +, and one under 12. the biggest walleye I caught was 24 1/2, on fri evening my friend with me snawlled his reel on a hook set on a fish and his reel exploded in a bird nest, ( it was an open face too), he what do I do now, so I took his pole, grabbed the line, gave it back, and said hand pull him in. we got the fish in, which was a 28 1/4, took some great pictures and released it, It was our only legal fish of our day and half trip. sure will plan on going up again soon, the big walleyes keep evading me, and there is one Smallie I want another chance of seeing. have a great summer. Jack.
