Hey Wilk. That sounds like a good time. Fishing the flats is one of my favorite things. I haven’t been out there (flats) yet this year but I anticipate spending the bulk of my time there on my next trip to the big pond.

Question for you… were you trolling deep divers by themselves or were you using three ways, leadcore, or some other method to get your cranks down? I usually use deep diving Reef Runners or Yozuri’s by themselves in deep water but I’m considering dabbling in other methods with other cranks too.

It is funny you should mention that storm on Friday night. I happened to be driving right by Mille Lacs before it hit (heading to the Whitefish Chain) and I remember thinking “there is going to be a rush at the ramps for this thing” as I looked up into that dark blue sky.

I have a bunch of reef runner colors but I haven’t used a lot of them. The color I have used most is “Cheap Sunglasses” and I’ve used “fried chicken” and their version of perch too. I found one firetiger deep diver reef runner at the walleye expo. I’m anxious to try that too.

I use the bigger, deepest diving reef runners.

I started using the new deep diver Yozuri’s this spring and they have been great. With fireline, the big ones get down even farther than reef runners and the next smaller size hit 25′ without a problem.

    Schnauzer,

We caught are fish on Reef Runner deep little rippers and junior thundersticks. We were running 10 lb. mono and used snap weights to get the cranks down. Had our best luck using 3 ounce snap weights 50 feet ahead of the lure: That definitely seemed to be the ticket!

Speed also seemed to be important because the vast majority of fish came around 2 miles an hour or down to even1.8.

    Hope this helps,

    Brian
