Coming up to the big pond next weekend for 4 days. Came last year for the first time and had a blast! We are staying in Isle, but are willing to put in anywhere close to where the action is. Last year we had our best luck on the mud flats. Just wondering if we should try the sand in the north first as the reports i have seen continue to be good from up there. Also, where is the best place to put in to fish the sand in the north.
Thanks for any info you can share.

I have been on Mille Lacs for the last week and you can still find plenty of action on the south end.The rocks and gravel are still holding loads of fish.Check areas like Banana Reef,Tundra and Hennipen Island in 18 to 35 ft of water. The big gravel areas of 4 mile and 5 mile also are doing well. The mud flats are loading up with eyes and they are willing to bite so you can`t go wrong.I did fish the north sand also so if you want to learn some of it for future use why not now.Start in the Malmo area and work from their in 18 to 25 ft of water.Just about anyway I fished I caught em so pick your favorite and enjoy as all good things eventually end.I will post a report on Sunday which will include a couple of good fish tales from the week.Have fun !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Friday evening I headed to a favorite rock spot off of the east side. I did find a few eager fish willing to take a leech fished under a bobber. Saturday at 6am I headed out to visit a couple of spots on the gravel that were working last weekend. I found a few fish but not the bite I expected. After an hour with 1 fish I headed out to the mud. It was such a nice calm morning how could a person go wrong with working the flats. The first spot I chose showed promise right away with the graph showing numerous fish present. I found some very willling fish that averaged 22″. This spot did not have any slot fish for me. There were quite a few boats out on the mud so I assume others were doing good also. I had to quit at noon so I tried a couple of other gravel spots on the way in. These areas held fish last year but so far this year they have been dissappointing.
    Good Luck next weekend.

Fished Mille Lacs on Saturday for the first time Since May 18th. I headed right for the north end sand where I had enjoyed a great first couple weeks of the season. There were fewer boats and I immediately figured the walleyes had finally moved off the sand in big numbers. I figured wrong. They just hammered red hooked lindy rigs all morning. Minnows, big leeches, little leeches – it didn’t matter. We actually started to change things up just for variety and a change of pace. We caught a few trolling deep diving cranks too but not at the same rate. We went back to rigging for a while, just to prove we could still bring in the big numbers, and then went for more variety and headed for the rocks. There were plenty of fish to be found there as well!

Some observations comparing the early season bite and Saturday: We found almost as many slot fish (6) as we did during the opening four days combined (8). I only saw 1 fish under the slot during that first week and I was relieved to see many more on Saturday. The average size had dropped too – from roughly 21″ to probably 19″ – but still with plenty at 23″ and up.

My only regret is not visiting a flat with the lake being so calm. Oh well, I’ll be at it again on Mille Lacs this Thursday and again on Saturday.
