Jigging

Two openers ago I was talking to my neighbors up on the lake and they had just hammered the walleyes that afternoon. I had literally tried everything and had no success. I asked them if they so kindly would tell me what and where? All they did was drift some sand an hang jigs over the side of the boat tipped with minnows. They said the magic color that afternoon was blue.

You don’t hear people using this technique that often on Mille Lacs. Anyone else have luck pitching or jigging on Mile Lacs?

I grew up fishing jig’s with minnows on Mille Lacs! When the leech was introduced in the early 70’s while bobber fishing….the minnow jig combo was lost in the dust. Anytime the fishing is off…..it’s good to reach deep in the bag and try something new or different!!

I didn’t know there was any other way to catch ’em but with jigs? ………………?(j/k) Theres nuthin’ like lettin’ an ‘eye pick up your jig, drag it for a while, then slapin’ ’em. ( well, there may be some things better…..) lol.

Something like trolling an old X-4 flatfish with a nightcrawler?

I have tried jigging a few times on Mille Lacs with not a lot of success. Last Memorial weekend I jigged my brains out on the sand, only to be outfished considerably by my Dad and girlfriend. I am sure it has its time and place.

Ask Sliderfishn about jigging on the pond. He told me that those Sliders work pretty well on the walleyes, but I am yet to see it. He might not be willing to admit that he was out there fishing walleyes.

Dave Koonce told me last summer / fall he was shipping enough paddletails to the mille lacs area that it aroused his curiosity enough to snoop a little. Turns out walleye guys were casting them on sand breaks and points and creaming the walleyes.

Not everyone has turned their back on jigs up there on the pond.

Never done this on Mille Lacs, but used to hammer them on Vermilion with this technique…chartreuse was always my color of choice
