Staying in an ice house out of Hunters this weekend. I’m assuming that Hunters will try to put the house on some fish. Yet, should we be prepared to be more mobile during the daytime hours and bring some portables? If so, can we buy a shelter license at Hunters? Or is it more cost-effective to just rent them…..or just go without if milder temps are expected? Also, I thought I read somewhere on here that you don’t need to license your shelter if it is not used in the sense of a fully set up shelter?…such as partially erected as a wind-break? Any suggestions or help appreciated.

I can’t comment on most of your questions except for one. The shelter license can be picked up in Malmo which is just up the road 5 miles or so. It is in the convenience store. They were very friendly, helpful, anf had great bait and prices. When we bought a scoop of minnows, we got the biggest scoop I have ever seen

In MN, if you have a portable like an Otter, where the back can be tipped up for a wind break, a shelter permit isn’t needed. Once the canvas is pulled all the way down, it then becomes a shelter and a permit is needed. (hey, I don’t make the rules!)

A resident shelter permit is $12.50. Not sure on a out state one and I don’t have a cost on the rentals from Hunter’s either.

The chances of being ON FISH (although all resort try) are 50/50 at best. Moving around is key or at aleast staying away from noise and the crowds.
Perfect example. Wats had good success in his location away from the traffic, while our house iced one 24″ eye early Friday before the activity and that was…about it. Putz and Winston did good 100 yards away from the noise.

So, I would say next year, I’m bringing a portable if I’m going to fish seriously.
