A buddy of mine called me yesterday and asked if I wanted to go to the pond this weekend. We have never been up there in the winter. His plan is to drive his 1/2 ton pickup with a pickup camper, and just stay out on the ice. Is this going to be a problem? We would like to be able to drive around and check out different spots. Is the ice safe enough to do this yet this year? Any feedback would be great!!!

I would call the resort that you plan to drive out of.

Which one would you suggest? I have only stayed at the state parks while up there, so I do ot know what resort is best.

Which side of the lake do you prefer?
A big group of IDA’ers will be out of Hunters on the eastside this weekend. Roads as of now are open (this could change) and well marked out of Hunters. But absolutley take Bobs advice and check in with a resort before accessing the lake to check on conditions. It various all over with pressure ridges on the lake.

I just talked to Hunter’s Point. He said the roads are good, and he did not seem to think that it would be a problem with a pick-up camper on a 1/2 ton. I think I will go ahead with the plan. Do you guys feel any different??

walleye1274, We were out on the lake last sunday, approx. 15″ of ice and we have had some good ice making nights this week. The resorts run around with 1 ton’s with 9′ blades on em. Chances are, you cant have much more weight on your frt & rear axles, than they have on the fronts of theirs. IMO

It sounds like I am going to make it up this weekend. Is hunters still the best place to drive out at?

Hunters Point has good roads out to many of the areas on the eastside, including the mud flats. Call them for the most current info at 320-676-3227

I was in Hunters Tuesday morning and George said the ice has been really pushing up on the pressure ridge with the big swing’s in temperature. They have this area bridged on the road.

Good luck….there are some nice perch being caught right now out of Hunters! along with a few walleyes also!

Still planning on heading up tonight. Is everything still ok with the roads as far as you have seen? I am going to call up this afternoon and see what they say. How has the bit been with this warmer weather? Thanks again!!
