Right from the mouth of my 2 year old, “WAWEYE Daddy”. So the trips to Cabelas to look at the fish in the tanks are making him good at being able to ID fish.
I wish I had a great fishing report for you but the long and short of it is that the bite was VERY slow for me. I did manage to find fish in about every place that I drilled holes, but getting them to bite was not as easy as I had planned. The most productive area’s that we hit were out in deep water, 32 feet was the best. The other thing that seemed to help was to get as FAR away from people as I could. I had stopped out on a flat that had a few folks on it, I kept my distance, but in 32 feet of water, with fish on the flasher, if someone walked up on me the fish would instantly go bye bye. That, I have never had happen in that deep of water, so to say the least, where the fish have seen some action, they are very negative. We did manage a few nice perch and some eyes, but over all it was slow.
The bitter sweet part of all of this was after spending the entire day on the water and drilling 50+ holes with very little to show for it, I get home and the little man was waiting in the garage to see what Daddy and uncle Dan had come home with. I think that the picture speaks for it self. I think I can honestly say that I had more fun in my garage watching my son play with the fish and the minnows in the bucket, then I did out on the ice that day. The best part is watching a young child learn even the smallest things, or getting the nerve to stick his hands into the minnow bucket to grab a hand full of minnows. At first he was not sure if he wanted to stick his hands in the water, and 2 minutes later I turn around to see him up to his elbows in water and two hands full of minnows. Now that is my KID…..I am starting to see that fishing is more about having friends and family to share these little things with that we so often take for granted. I for one will always look back at this trip and I may not remember the # of fish that we got, but I sure will not forget the first words out of my sons mouth when we got home…..WAWEYE Daddy!!!!!
