Well I had the opportunity so I decided to take it. Some old friends of mine were in the area for the holidays and had wanted to fish Mille Lacs for the first time. I figured some hot perch action would get them hooked. Neither of them ice fish much so this was really new. We arrived by noon and we tried a few shallower rock breaks that had produced in the past, And after wandering to 4 or 5 different areas we finally got on top of some lively perch on a gravel break in 14 to 18 feet. It didn’t appear to matter top or bottom as we worked the edges. We ended up hole hopping around the break for a few hours and managed 47 perch all under 11 inches all on glow devil perch spoons. We couldn’t buy one over 11. But the fish were biting and we acheived a good mess for a decent fry. Needless to say my friends Roger and Dave were just tickled for this to be their first experience and a successful one at that. Neither of the two had ever used a flasher before so I borrowed them a couple Lx3’s. In a matter of a half hour they were running them like they had had them for years; And they both came to consensus that you could not fish without the marcum’s once you had fished with it. All in all it was a beautiful day with fish as a bonus. I think the young pups are hooked pretty good as they can’t wait for a walleye trip. Heres a couple of pics of roger, myself, and small hoard of perch.
