Went out last night at 8:00 PM and fished untill 12:00. Water temp was 38′ F and fishing was poor. Trolled by indian point and the point north of there which I believe is Nelson point. Was bumping fish with our husky jerks and finally snagged one which turned out to be a tulibee. That was the only fish we caught. At midnight we decided we punished ourselves enough and went home. The crank bite was off.

The Tulibee spawn is probably in full swing and has been for a week or so. This will push the walleyes into deeper water just off the first break. This is a great time to bobber fish. You can also check up close to shore along the shorelines with cranks. Not all areas will see the spawn so dont give up if the weather holds out.

Do the tulibees spawn on just the rocks or will they be in the weeds as well. Noticed in the last week or so that most of our action has been on weed lines.

Has anyone tried using planer boards at nite on mille lacs?
I have used them for shallow (4 to 8′) water fishing and done well.

The public ramp by the casino was half open. The ice on the other side was pretty thick. The next dip in temperature we get it will probably be tough to launch on the south side of the lake. I would guess the North side will be open yet. Next year we will have to chase some eye’s and smallmouth on the big lake Jack!

Mike W. From what I know the tulibee spawn on the shallow rocks, not weeds. This year we have been finding plenty of smaller fish in the weeds and 90% of our big fish, 26″ and over on the rocks. The weird thing is we caught many more big fish last year in the same locations, including the weeds. I presume it is due to the warmer water temps we had so late this year and maybe the increase in competition from the smaller fish. The bigger fish must have stayed out longer or moved to different spots that I am hitting. I guess I need to add a few more spots for next year. I have been tracking detailed data the last 5 years on my fish and the water temps were roughly 7 degrees warmer this year than last up to this week.

My brother and I ended up driving up to Mille Lacs on Thursday night only to turn around and head back home. It was dissapointing but the light snow they had forecast was covering the ground and we were concerned about being able to get boat back on trailer at the end of the night. We ended up fishing Pool 4 for 3 days and caught alot of nice sauger and walleyes pulling 3 ways w/floaters and minnows. Can’t wait to get back to Mille Lacs next year though!
