Direct quote from my cousin who has never fished Mille Lacs fall trolling bite!!! We fished slot machine bay last night! My cousin also made it clear to me that he didn’t have any high expectations on the night! He has fished with me before and to say the least he has struggled or I have struggled to put him on fish!!! Well 3 minutes into the night he was off the schnid!! a nice 20″ fish to start the night was great! The fish were the HJ # 12’s for the first part of the night!!! It was very consistant action til 9 pm. Then they shut off like a switch .. I had to completly change my program I was running! Speed, Bait, Trolling pattern. I slowed down even more 1.1-1.3 was key later on. Bait of choice was a Salmo Sting! My trolling pattern then switched to a straight as an arrow presentation vs the typical S pattern that was producing earlier in the night! Why did they change??? Who knows!!!! The winds did pick up last night about that time, could have changed there feeding habits or desire!!! Biggest thing I learned last night is not to be afraid of change! I know a lot of people have been crushing the fish this fall, but when the bite falls off for some reason a change is in order!!!
Overall we had a good night of fishing, I think we totalled out just short of 20 fish! Biggest being a 25″ fish! I am going to try and post the biggest/fattest 24’er I have ever seen.
If you haven’t put the boat away yet get up there and enjoyed the beautiful nights( anyone see the northern lights last night? ) and what Mille lacs has to offer us!
I hope to see more of you yet this fall!!!
