Headed up to the pond last night with Trigger 1 and with the weather man calling for light SE winds decided to hit the north end honey hole Lets just say he got the direction right I usually land near garrison and head east and work my way back but with some rollers coming in I decided to trailer east and drop in closer to the spot. That was a good idea but unfortunatly the fish were either full or turned off by the wind. After a few hours of rocking and rolling and trying every crank in the box (even firetiger)and only 2 fish boated I said how about we load up the boat and head somewhere else Lets just say it wasnt hard to convince Trigger to get out of there So we loaded up and headed south to calmer water.Turned out to be the right thing to do as we boated the first fish in about the first minute and caught 13 more in 1 1/2-2 hours.Didnt get any pigs biggest fish was a plump 24 and wouldnt you know firetiger HJ12 was the ticket.I did notice one thing last night when we finally found some fish that with the water dipping below 50 the fish are starting to slow down and just come and grab onto the crank and the rod loads up.Going real slow was the key and although I was running the kicker at 1.3-1.5 we picked up fish by kicking it out if gear.Headed back up tonight for the weekend but the wind doesnt look good for tonight but hope to get out Saturday.Good luck and see ya on the pond

Are you willing to tell us how far south you moved to find fish? Were you finding them along/on weed lines or over rocks?
I’m taking one or two IDA members out on Sat nite on the west side. Debating between launching at Sha Bush Kong(sp?) or St Albans. If the weed bite is still on, then Sha Bush Kong may offer more wind protection. If its a rock bite, or we need to explore both rocks and weeds, then I know more spots near St Albans , but more exposure to S winds.
Thanks.
October 28, 2005 at 5:17 pm #392714Sounds like I made the right plan by not hitting the north end last night. realy wanted to get up that way and hit some spots but the wind kept me pretty close to garrison.
the bite around garrison was not hot and heavy either lst night. Ended up catching 5 with just short of 24″ being the biggest. Must of missed twice as many as where caught. These where light bitting fish. Had a couple that made me think what was that. Working what was left of the standing weeds was where I found fish. Finding standing weeds on a decent break and mix in lots of S turns over the weeds. Almost all fish where caught while turning. Never did touch a fish on the rocks.
It was a little tricky keeping a constant speen last night but did stick around 1.5mph.
For lures I stuck it out with lazer craw and tiger roan rouges.
Water temps started at 48 last night and had dropped to 47 towards the end of the night. Get out there and enjoy the weather this weekend guys. Remember opening of deer hunting a couple years back when it was better than 10 below. Cant think nice nights like last night are going to be around for to much longer.October 28, 2005 at 5:20 pm #392715I will PM you where I caught the fish but that doesnt mean you will catch fish there.Things can change every night like last night and you have to be willing to move around.Sometimes not far.I have what I call the 30 minute rule no action in 30 minutes im on the move.Although I did exceed that last night due to weather conditions and the fish tended to turn on as the night goes on.Probably should have stuck to the rule Dont fall into the trap that I caught them here last night or before I will get them here again. If the fish have been biting well in a certain spot and they arnt biting at the time sometimes I will check back later.I have caught almost every fish this year in 6-10 Fow and 8 FOW has been almost magical. If you have a Mille Lacs chip just look for areas with 8 FOW with with deeper water near by and you will probably find some fish. Some rock or weeds or transition areas are also a bonus. And like I said in my post go slow if you think you are going slow go slower. These fish are already getting sluggish with the colder water and arent the rockets they were last week.
October 28, 2005 at 5:39 pm #392722hey good to hear you didn’t get skunked!
now that the mph are down to 1.5 and less are you going back about 100′ or still in that 80′ range? I might have to give 69′ a try again!
another thought is to creep up shallower too, like 4-6 now, since the water should be a bit warmer shallower??
October 28, 2005 at 5:48 pm #392725Speaking of skunks how are ya?Same drill Firetiger HJ12 80 feet back. When that quits working Ill try something else.Stop by this weekend if your up and dont forget the beer

I will agree with you castawy, running back to hunters at 2 AM the waves were good 3′ with occasional larger… What happended to the forecast for 3-5mph???
Thanks to Chris and Rob for the tips to make an enjoyable evening with Dad!

My little 25″
October 28, 2005 at 7:29 pm #392741Did they turn on later there?May have crossed paths with ya but we packed up and headed south.Going by the weather looks like a hurricane is coming this weekend.Could turn out to be one of these kindof weekends.
October 28, 2005 at 7:29 pm #392742Way to go Ted! I let my old man catch the large one too the other night ! He kicked my ! Glad to see you got into some fish under some difficult wind. You can usually count on the weatherman to be 50/50, but these last few weeks he has been right 10% of the time and wrong 90%
Glad things worked out for you and your Dad! Can’t beat fishing with Dad and spanking some nice fish! Keep in touch Ted!
ted-merdanPosts: 1036October 28, 2005 at 8:18 pm #392758We had our lines in the water @ 6PM and didn’t get a fish until 7:30 – wrong bait profile and colors coupled with a location refinement. Very steady action until 11 and then at 11:45 dad pops the big one and we end up staying another 2 hours with a few short fish to show for… I like fishing at night because my boat blends into the darkness but I still managed to attract some dandy attention. I had one boat that refused to allow us to pass each other while trolling a break – would turn and cut me off each time or pull a 180 to get in front of me. They were more concerned about herding me in this direction or that direction. I just kept moving farther away and still caught fish…
As for the weatherman, with a forecast of gusts to 31 tonight, I would expect calm conditions given their mastery of their profession (?)
If the wind does switch tomorrow afternoon, things should go…
I will either be on Pool 4 Sunday or back up to the pond on Sunday night. I am doing a guide trip that Ranger donated for a cancer benefit for the individual and his father, so I am making a few calls to see which the best option is given the condition of my passengers.
October 28, 2005 at 8:29 pm #392762That wasnt me was it I usually like to bump into those Rangers and knock some of that sparkly stuff into the water. It seems to attract the fish Hey did the price of that oil come down yet?
ted-merdanPosts: 1036October 28, 2005 at 8:40 pm #392768Just to be clear, I certainly wasn’t thinking it was you. You have provided great reports on this site and that’s what this site is about. I will only post here with info anymore…
I do have a wrap on my boat so it doesn’t sparkle but still attracts attention. It will be sparkly when it comes back from the factory in December and heads to it’s new home though!
As for the oil price, I ran up there at 55 from hunters but came in at only 25 beacuse it was DARK. You only live once so you might as well go fast to have more time to fish!!!
Good luck this weekend with either the walleyes or the bottle species!
