Last night I was on Mille Lac and had one of my best nights of fishing ever. Landed about 25 walleyes:
18 x 15″-20″
1 x 21.5″
1 x 23″
3 x 24″
3 x 25″
Two had DNR tags, all were released.
Plus a FAT 31″ northern that miraculously did not bite me off until I got his stanky self in the boat even though the shad rap was totally enclosed in his maw.
Big bright full moon in a cloudless sky, very light to no wind, air temps in the 50s down into the 40s by the time I loaded up at 1 a.m. Almost all fish were caught on a #7 firetiger shallow shad rap in 7′-8′ over weeds. With no wind and PowerPro you know exactly what your bait is doing back there. Each hit was a definite jolt. On three different occasions a walleye hit the bait, did not get hooked, then turned and nailed it again. I stayed at 1.8-2.2 mph, used my electric motor, and let LOTS of line out. After my batteries died I trolled with the big motor at 2.4 and got a few more.
I spent most of my time in Sha Bosh Kung (Casino) Bay. Boat traffic was moderate overall, though it was clear enough to see many sets of lights working Indian Point. I ran up to Wigwam Bay and found no boats working there. Fishing was slower in Wigwam but I did land two of the 25″ fish south of the rock island. The weeds are thicker in that area than they are in Sha Bosh Kung Bay.
All in all just a fantastic, memorable night on the water.
