Here’s a quickie for all you guys coming up this weekend…. the fish are smackin’! LOTS of fish. I’m not seeing the outrageous average size like we will when the water cools some more but we did stick a decent number of fish in the 22″ – 25″ range last night. Nothing over 25″. Finding and catching “eaters” should not be a problem. Pulling raps outproduced stickbaits by an incredible margin although the 3 largest fish in my boat still came on sticks. I would MAYBE get one fish on a husky jerk or a rogue on a pass and then turn around and get 4 or 5 in the same stretch on a #5 or #7 shad rap. My most productive speeds were in the 2.2 – 2.5 mph range. I caught fish on rock on Knox Point, fish on sand further east and fish on weeds on the west so there wasn’t “one structure” type giving up fish. Once I put the stickbaits down and started pulling the raps the numbers were there.

Have fun everyone. I’ll get a full report up and in place on Sunday if all goes well.

Oh yeah… I should mention that the bobber and bait guys I’ve talked with are doing good as well.

Lots more of the same last night… lots of eaters from 17″ – 22″ but the bigger fish are tough to come by. #5 shad raps in 6.5 – 8 feet of water on the west side. 2.2 mph was the ticket. The customers were happy with a nice 3 man limit of eaters in the box within a few hours of being on the water but I’m left wondering where to look to find a good bite on the tanks mille lacs is known for. Tonight I plan to fish off-shore structures in deeper water in order to locate the bigger fish.

Anyone run into a consisent bite on the 25″+ fish? I’m “all ears” if you have!

Shad raps huh? I’ll have to try that.

On Fri Night 16th into early Sat. Cyberfish and I were out on Indian. It was a zoo at first but by the time we left 4AM we were the only one’s left.

Anyway we did OK. Cyb had the hot stick as usual and caught 5 of the big dogs between 26″-28″ (4×27-28). He was using a 12 or 14 Firetiger husky jerk. He also had on and missed a couple of hawgs, got an eater, a few cigars, and a hefty Lock Bass.

I used an assortment of smaller suspending stick baits and got a limit of keepers, a couple of cigars, and a small Lock Bass, and missed a few hits.

Our best bite was going into the wind, so slower seemed to be our key. The weather was warm enough, the wind was perfect for my craft and the nearly full moon was bright as can be. Other than Cyb. kicking my butt on the big fish, it was an OK night. I may head out on my own for a while tonight.

Here is one that Lip Ripped. She went 25″ and weighed in at 5.5 pounds. She took a Shad Rap while we were in neutral, and he was netting a fish for Josh Hukriede. Funny story there! “Hey Rob!” “You want this fish, or should I take it?”

Here is my Nephew Jake Stark of Woodbury with a 15 pound pike caught while trolling over a large cloud of bait in 12 FOW. Jake was so excited when he hooked it, I swear it skied in to the boat! Congrats and Happy B-Day Jake!

And immediately following that one, this night time slimer!
(Note to self, get out the power sprayer, and get the smell out of the boat… )

Thur night I got in to a mess of 20″ to 22″ fish on a reef that comes up from 14′ w/ “Knobs” (locals will know where I was ‘cuz it is called something else on maps) that top out in the 6’to 8’ range. A hot chub Taildance was the only ticket. I’d go to a Rogue, HJ, Floater, SR, Bomber, after not getting bit put the Taildancer in & nail one.
Friday nite I was able to give a bro. in law a real experiance. Nothing over 25″ but the 21″ fought like crazy. Again Taildance just left in the rod holders & as James noted 2.2 mph. There were many boats around us at sundown that later left. We were done @ 1:00.
Sat I put on a fried turkey feed for relatives & didn’t get out as soon as I wanted. I had a MUCH harder time w/ the weather change & metallic Bombers & Rogues were the ticket. Much smaller fish that night & not nearly as many. Lots of clueless boats though. Short night due to family commitments & in by 11:00.
Lite rain on Sun night & Muggs had appeal.
