we were up on the puddle last weekend, and tried using boards for the first time, but we were met with some resistance, the boards just would not stay clipped to the lines, didn’t know if rough water had anything to do with this or maybe line diamater any tips would be great.

Use the red clips, the ones with the pin in the middle. We fish Erie in 6ft waves and they stay put. Off-shore also makes a in-line stop called a speed bead. Here’s their web site. off shore

Were you trolling with the wind?

What kind of boards were you using? What type of line were you using. I typically “double wrap” the front clip that comes from the boat. I did end up losing a yellow off-shore board last weekend (came undone) and had to pull all 4 boards in a turn around to go get her, what a pain and a hassle. I like to use the orange Church Tackle brand (WalleyeBoard) better. With this board if it ever to happens to come unclipped, it still stays attached to your line and all you have to do is reel in that rod. I have used these Church Boards in big waves and not had many issues. Click on the attachment to see the board Church’s Walleye Board

If anything last weekend was the calmest day I have had pulling boards this year I believe. Try double wrapping around the clip and see if that helps!

the boards that we were using were the yellow birds, I had on tuff line that i use on my muskie rig. It seemed that we had the most trouble going into the wind.

When trolling boards you should troll with the wind or cross wind, not directly into it. Even small waves can buck a board hard enough to pull it loose.
I use the Off Shore boards and I have the black flip over clip on the front of the board that is designed for super lines….I just use mono but it is quick to put on and quick to take off and I have never lost a board.

You might want to chekc the report Lip Ripper put in the fishing reports forum back on 7/9 I think it was….there was a ton of great planer board information there from a bunch of different people.

I have had excellent luck setting up off-shore boards with the church tackle clips (old mr. walleye) when running any sort of fireline/power pro for trolling. I now have a set of dedicated boards for fireline with the metal (church)clips and a set of mono boards with the red clips that were referenced above.

An excellent place th buy the metal (church) clips is http://www.xtremetackle.com.

    Have fun this weekend!!!

thanks for all of the tips it pretty much sounds like the church boards and clips are the way to go, hopefully next time will be a better experience.

Ted, you mentioned the red clips!
Hook set me up with red clips back a few years ago and they work ok for me! I run Offshore boards with a red clip up front and a black clip in back. I use 12lb fireline on my line counter reels. I do loop the front red clip and just go one time through the black rear one.
