Walleye Report from Saturday

Actually got clearance from the tower and made it up to Mille Lacs with Walleye GFA later Saturday afternoon. We started out Lindy-rigging crawlers and leeches just off the flats. That produced nothing. We then tried pulling spinners just off the edge of the flats with only a 14″ to show for our efforts. Finally as the sun was setting we anchored on the east edge of the flat and did the slip bobber leech deal. That was the ticket! We stayed well after dark and caught 2 26″ fish as well as a 22″. We also caught a fish about 1/16″ under 20 an 18″ and lots of 12″ to 17″ fish. The wind really picked up and we had 2′ to 3′ rollers going after the sun went down. So unfortunately we bailed on getting out the camera and trying to take pictures. But we had a good time and caught fish! Thanks GFA for being the captain!

    Hey Jack!
I got the first 26″ and I was admiring it when it suddenly occurred to me that I was on Mille Lacs and it had to go back. So I chucked it back in the lake not even thinking about a picture. The other 26″ GFA caught and by then it was way dark and windy and neither of us felt like trying to find the camera.

    Thanks Tuck!
I’m not a huge fan of slip-bobbering; but if the bite is going that method is as fun as any other. Plus you can eat a sandwich and fish at the same time. Only problem I’m having is that I keep seeing a lighted Thill bobber sinking below the waves when I close my eyes. Those things are hypnotic!

What are you getting for rods Tuck?? I was thinking a 7’6″ med light would be perfect for both lingy’s and corks??

Just got back last night. Fished Sunday/Monday.

Sunday, we launched off of Garrison, and fished a few flats in that area. We boated 10 fish, up to 26″. Lots of perch out there, too. 8′ snells, and jumbo leeches; drifting with the wind.

Monday, was a lost cause. We launched off of the Red Door, and it was unbelievably rough. We tried one of the closest flats, and even with windsocks out, we couldn’t drift appropriately. We ended up driving down to Isle, and spent time south of Hennepin Island, trolling cranks. No takers down there, but we did catch a Zebco 202 combo – so if anyone wants to claim it, give me a shout. LOL.

Nice Fish DD! Sounds like you had a blast. I hear you about the bobber fishing. But when they are suicide biting like that, hard not to cork. Good luck this wekeend!

C’mon guys. Saturday night, Agate Reef, lake like glass, sun going down, a couple of bobbers behind the boat, Twins on the radio, some beer in the cooler, sunflower seed hulls all around the boat, and some walleyes besides. Don’t get much better. It’s my ice fishing fix until hard water finally gets here.

Kooty, I found the ultimate corking rod, and also for dragging 3-ways. It is the 9’6″ St. Croix Wild River Rod, medium action with the fast tip. I have been wondering about this rod for some time, and wanted to see and feel one. As luck would have it, Josh Hukriede had one up there last week that he got out of a Cabelas bargain bin. You can get by using 4 pound test for finesse corking, and I am also getting the bait casting model for pulling 3-ways. I am as excited as a kid at Christmas! Next month I am ordering two 10’6″ Wild River Mediums for trolling with boards!

Putz, watch those seeds! I have changed out two bilge pumps due to those little buggers!

I’d sure like to see/try out those rods once you have them. Obviously the Wild River rods have gotten a lot of positive press from others here, but I have yet to fish with one. So when you coming fishing with me??

I am interested in seeing how the medium action will perform with 4-6 oz of weight?? The spinning rod should make a great lindy rod also?? At least you won’t have to stan on your tippy toes when netting a fish on Mille Lacs!!

I know Deezee runs those WR Rods 10’6″ for Pulling boards. I liked them when I fished them with him last Summer!

Just remembered something – i had heard something about blue octopus hooks working well up there. We ran blue, red, and yellow hooks while up there and the blue seemed to do better.
