    Josh and I almost headed out yesterday to troll some new baits I made but the wind quickly changed my mind when I woke up, I needed the break.
    This body is pretty beat up from the last six days on the water. It’s amazing what those little fish can do to your hands after a while. Not to mention the hooks in the fingers, rain and sunburn! God I feel old!

    Or maybe it’s a coordination thing?

    Alright, I’ll brag….I was out on the north end on Saturday and I caught a giant skunk! I had a decent pike hit near the boat and that was about the extent of my action. I had exactly zero musky sightings.

    We were walleye fishing the pond with that same crank bait I caught the “ski” on the croix and low and behold I look down as my crank is comming in and here is another torpedo headed right for the boat! this fish was huge!!! It was definatly bigger than the forty incher last month. it looked 6 inches across the back. she never hit the poor dt 6 but I thought sure she was going to. it sure was fun!!

    That’s why I carry a broom handle in the boat! Gotta scare those big bait robbing buggers!
    Was it in the spot we talked about?

    AWH;

    Don’t feel bad!

    My buddy was up there on Saturday and never raised a fish. he too, caught a few decent pike, but no skis.

    He worked Isle area, but that was it.

    I also heard through the grapevine, that many other “reputable” ski hunters also had a very, very tough weekend with the same results as you.

    It is still early yet. Can’t wait for that late July heat to come along to really burn the bucktails on the north end!!!

    We pulled this 40″er in last Saturday. What makes this story interesting is we were bass fishing with 3″ tubes. My buddy brought this fish in using 8lb test, no leader, and a 3/0 hook. She fought for only @ 10 minutes before we hand-landed her, snapped a quick photo and put her back.

    2-3 foot of water, under a dock, Isle Bay. We also had one on the next morning in the same general area. This one took a Spittin’ Image for about 5 minutes of fun before she just let go.

    I fished the big pond for muskies a week ago today…..so last Thursday. My father-in-law landed two pike, biggest around 33 inches. Did have 5-6 follows. Two of which were pretty aggressive fish. I pulled the bait out of the water without watching behind it….as I pulled the bait out they came up fast and boiled next to the boat. One actually came out of the water. I switched to a giant jackpot about 2 minutes later and had him follow behind it with his fin out of the water!!!! I thought for sure he would smack it…but he just sunk down. We came back about two hours later and tried the same spot….3rd or 4th cast, he made an aggressive follow, but did not take. I would guess he was in the upper 40 inch range…possibly even 50! Any ideas on the best approach to that kind of fish? He wanted it, but was a little leary. We did also see about 6-8 fish just sitting on the bottom, in 6-7 fow. Plan on going back in the next week or two. Was on North end. Only saw one other boat fishing muskies.

    Steve;

    Get a “Bulldawg” for a throw back lure, or even a Tiger Tube.

    The Bulldawg is an amazing lure for getting a follwer into a biter. It will pull the most negative fish out from his haunts!!!!

    Problem is: One fish of any porportion will generally destroy a Bulldawg. So, for $20 you hope it is a fish you are happy to have destroy your bait.

    (James: HINT-HINT: We need BFN to start making musky plastics!!!! )

    It is a “freak” of a lure.

    bulldawg

    It basically is a huge twister tail. The tail is literally 12″ long….. It has a freak of a body with a single hook on the top and a treble on the bottom.

    There are weighted and non-weighted ones. I would get the weighted for Mille lakes.

    Simple lure to use. Cast out and slow retrieve. For whatever odd reason, I have seen this lure call in monster fish, when no other lure would do it. The problem with that, is when it takes “this lure” to call in these fish, it is hard to make them commit. Most of the time (not all, but most), when muskies follow plastics, they just follow. Mainly, I beleive that most people use them as a “last resort” throw back lure. At this time, my feeling is that the fish is conditioned to what is going on, plus if they are just following in the first place, you either hit them at the beginning or the very end of the “feeding window”. My advice is if you have a hot fish that follows, but won’t commit……..Keep this lure “loaded” on a rod, ready to cast out. When you bring your fish to the boat, immediately change up and cast this bait out to where you raised the fish. Don’t waste time. Do it FAST, while the fish is still hot!!!

    Also;
    When this happens, and you have open time to fish, keep track of the time the fish followed. Hit her up the next day and hour earlier or hour later, and you might catch her on the feeding frenzy.

    Go to that fishing store in Duluth (Can’t remember the name), that has it JAMMED FULL of fishing tackle, where you can barely walk through the isles, they will have a selection!!!

    I will be up on monday (7/11)next week all day. I will be leaving from WI and launching at the Red Door around 430-5am
    fishing the north shore for the day and depending on the bite I might run to the flats for eyes.

    I will be going alone unless someone wants to meet me there.

    I only have enough 2 muskie rods for myself, so you would have to have your own gear.
    Walleye suff I should have covered but if you feel comfortable with your own please feel free to bring it.

    let me know if you up for a day of casting on the pond

    gary,
    try a hot screwdriver to ptach up your bulldawgs. works great. just heat it up and stick it in the slices and melt it back together. if there are chunks missing just melt in plastic from other chewed up dawgs that are beyond repair……tom f

    Hmmm….I have more Dawgs than any other bait..I think some where in the area of 40 Dawgs now…I have many that have 5-6 fish on them and are still going strong. As a matter of fact I don’t think I’ve had to toss one yet. Sometimes you have to repair them with a torch a bit but then they work like new

    Great bait…

    A tip: Try something I call “Fishing inside out”…get your boat on the break/weedline and cast your Dawg out over open water..count to ten and with your rod at 12oclock Rip the dawg hard and reel fast back at the bait till your rod is back at the 12 oclock…about 10 yards from the boat just let the bait swing in till it’s straight down from your rod tip and then pump it to the surface. Get aggressive with the Dawg and you’ll be surprised how many fish you’ll catch…even got my biggest wetrag..er hem..I mean Walleye on a Dawg doing this exact thing….hit right at the side of the boat….28”
