AITKIN, Minn. (AP) – A former deputy chief with the St. Paul Fire Department is dead following a boat collision on Lake Mille Lacs.

56-year-old Tim Verros was killed when his 17-foot boat hit an 18-foot boat on the northeast side of the lake, about 350 yards from shore.

The Aitkin County sheriff’s office says the operators of both boats were returning to shore after fishing. Both boats had bow and stern lights on at the time of the collision.

Verros was pronounced dead late Saturday night at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin.

The passenger in Verros’ boat, 58-year-old Raymond Liss of Prior Lake was being treated for injuries the sheriff’s office says are not life-threatening.

Three passengers in the other boat sustained minor injuries.

In another report I heard that this happened at 10pm. So you probably had a bunch of boats running in just before the night ban kicked in. Gotta be carefull out there…..

Word was that there were 300 + boats in the area before 10pm.

I would like to see the night ban lifted for this very reason! We noticed boats without lights on when we headed in Saturday night. I don’t know if they had problems, or just didn’t care. But one almost got clipped! I think it is dangerous when all these guys with high powered boats race to be the first ot the access to pull out in the dark! Not good!

    EYE-GUIDE,

I completely agree with you. I try to get off the lake before the mad dash to the access.

BTW, both of the guys involved were not racing to the access. They both own homes on the lake. It just seems that it was a very unfortunate accident. My thoughts and prayers go out to all involved. This could happen to anyone.

Also, this did not happen on the NE side like the news has reported. It happened between Garrison and Myr Mar.
