Did anyone else on Mille Lacs this weekend notice how wild the walleye were? I could not believe how nuts they went when coming to the boat! We had them jumping out of the water like smallies! We lost two nice slots at the side of the boat when my short handled Beckman let us down! I popped for a new Frabil today that extends out to 8 feet! Now (ElRoy) has nothing to complain about when netting my fish!

Yeah, Tuck, we caught ours after the wind went down so we could see them about 3-4 feet under the water. Evidently they saw the boat about that time too. They didn’t jump but all heck broke loose about the time we were ready to put the net in the water. They were definetly strong and healthy fish.
BTW, I have a question. I had two hooksets on very solid fish with my lindy rig only to have the hook pop out. This is my first year using Power Pro for that type of fishing and I think my kamakazie hookset was too much for the no stretch line. Thinking about going back to mono for that application. Any thoughts?

    Putz,
Try putting a circle hook on it, You won’t even have to set the hook,Just start reeling. BTW…….. Do you bait your lindy’s with Lutifisk? Brian was wondering but did’nt want to ask.

Two options for you. Go with a medium light action pole, with very little backbone for your power pro. Use a very long rod, 8-10 footer. This takes some of the sting out of the Power Pro. It has 0 stretch as you know. You can pull lures out of stumps, it would surely come out of a walleye’s mouth. Although, he or she may get a little dental work done along the way.

Otherwise, a 6.6 to 8 foot rod with 4-8 pound mono is the way to go. Team that up with a medium action rod, and a fast tip for me anyway, and you have a walleye slayer for Lindy’s. I like the controlled stretch of Mono, and I like really setting the hook when that time comes. Use the PP for casting cranks into shore!

    Hey Putz,

I used to have the same problem when I switched to Firleline an number of years back. Now I love the no stretch, sensitivity, and the thin diameter of the Fireline. I have since calmed down my hook sets while lindying to more of a medium to slow quickness sweeping motion. For me this is the way to go. I have immensly increased my catch rate using this method. My brtoher still struggles with the slower sweeping motion and still often does a KING KONG hook set, until he catches a few and he can settle down . I have not used the power pro, but hearing about the no stretch characteristics, I’m sure this method would work for that also, as long as you can keep your composure and slow down that rod sweep from the big Monster Musky Hook set . I hope this gives you another option .

I agree with you Tuck…the eyes were really strong and did way more running than normal. The first one I got I was sure it was a northern the way it was fighting….they all fought that way…very agressive….more than I remember.
It was a blast catching them though….anyone that says walleyes can’t fight should have caught one this last weekend….it was great!!

Great suggestions, guys. After 40 years of breaking their necks, I don’t think that hook set will settle down in the heat of the moment. Isn’t it great to still get excited about a darn little 2 foot fish! It’ll be my 6.5 ft St Croix medium fast stick with 8 lb XL mono for the next try. Thanks.
Now if I can get my net man to settle down.

For two years I have been using the shock collar on ElRoy. Only had to use it twice this weekend!

The only other time I saw walleyes this wild was when Hook and I fished a WWA tournament on Winnie. Darn near needed a shotgun to slow them down enough to get them netted!

Tuck thats right, you quickly learned to just stick the net out and catch them as they swam by, no stabs or dips just time them as they’d swim by and let them go right into the net.

Kinda like fishing with my Dad when I was a kid he’d always say “just hold the net in the water and i’ll swim the fish right into the net for ya”.
Well it worked most of the time!

Tuck- I do recall seeing one of the net jobs. I think you where running to much juice thru the collar the way Leroy was jumpin around. He did eventually getter done!

    Tuck,

What type of Frabill did you end up getting? I have been looking at getting a new one hear in the next few months. Seems Frabill has quite a few to choose from.

I fished a different lake but did notice an attitude of the eyes in the livewell. P’oed suckers to say the least!

I got the Tru Loc. She goes out to 8 feet for ElRoys aligator arms.

Big D, I remember your comment about “Trouble in the Tuckner/Carl camp” over the VHF.
I had to turn ‘er up to 7 and then he got it the idea. Darn near tossed it over the other side of the boat though!

Lip Ripper….you might want to check out the StowMaster nets. I have one with an extending handle and I love it.
Folds up and fits in my front compartment but when open and extended feels as good or better than any net I have used.

Oh yeah, like Buckshot said, the Frabil breaks down for storage too.
