Well, it happens every year….. That is, sometime over the course of the year I have a run in with a musky. This year it happened on Saturday night.

Wish I could tell a tale of a mighty 40 minute battle and screaming drags. But it went like this…..

Trolling along an east side rock reef into the wind. A pretty good chop at the time. I hook into the fish which feels much like the other 24-27 inch walleyes we had been catching. I knock the kicker out of gear and begin reeling to the fish. Partner goes ahead and reels in because we are drifting back with the wind and grabs the net. Not much of a fight as we are over the fish pretty fast. One swipe of the net and she is laying on the floor of the boat…..just like that!! She spit the crank while in the net and was photoed and released in a very short period time.

Couple of notes on this fish. You can see a mark running across the fish. This was apparently an old injury. In fact, this fish had that “OK – hurry up with the camera” attitude and did not fight, flop or gator roll while in the boat. I think this fish had seen the inside of a boat a few times. My ruler only goes to 30 inches and of course did not get a measurement. All I can say is “It was BIG”!!!

Sweet fish JJ! I had two lat year that did the same thing. They swam right to the boat, nice as can be, and allowed themselves to be unhooked and returned. Maybe there is a recessed docile gene in some of the Mille Lacs muskys? Doubt it!

Probably all out of energy from the feeding binges! Musky fisherman love when hawgs are caught unintentionally

It’s just a possibility but may she had been caught earlier that day or even in the week and was too tired to put up any fuss? I don’t know what it is about some fish that insist on fighting non-stop and others cooperate so well! I’ve had pike and walleye be the same way…… even bass on occassion. Smallies lose some of the fight during summer nights but once to the boat they seem to get “ancy”. Anyway, with fish that big, I’m happy for the both of you that you got through the ordeal unharmed!!!

Maybe it knew you were after walleyes???
