I got out again on wednesday night in search of the big mama’s on Mille Lacs. Thanks for the info to those who posted to question about the east side. My brother and I put in at Cedar Creek and began trolling near Doe Island just before dark. Be careful out there especially if you don’t have GPS with the rocks and no buoys. We didn’t really mark many fish in that area and had no luck. The wind seemed to be more out of the south than east which made me think that maybe we could put my smaller boat in on the west side in some of the protected bays. Upon arrival, the parking lot was packed, everyone that was anyone was out there and we saw a lot of flashes. I knew that’s where we needed to be with such a long stretch of weeds to gravel, but we played conservative and decided not to offer my little boston whaler up to the God’s of Mille Lacs and went back to Isle where it was a bit more protected. We started out trolling in the bay and found very irregular weed growth and difficulty in getting a long run with out major weed hook ups. So we went out to the west side of the channel that leads out to the main lake and worked the 6-8 regions near the standing reeds. Right away my brother got bit and put the first of a few eaters in the boat. we worked our way out of the bay and around the first rock pile on that corner, and the brother hooked up again. After a few nice pics, we were back at it. We noticed that our hits were coming very close to a very bright light on the corner, possibly the boat launch at Father Hennepin State Park. My only theory is that with all the cloud cover and no moon to speak of, the fish were seeing our baits silouhette better in the light…I don’t know. I finally tangled with a fish between the point and the rocks in about 10 feet and she was a beauty. 26 inch and fat as heck. After a picture, she was released to swim another day. All in all, we hooked up with four fish, and didn’t sink my boat which was a plus! Has anyone experienced anything like that with the light, or any thoughts on it? HOw was the west side the last few nights for those over there?

Wednedsday nite was slow. Fished West side until 1:00 AM; could have quit when eclipse started. 6 fish total, none of the big mamas we are looking for. Last night, 11 fish total on the West side. Fished until 1:00, could have quit at 11:00 as we only caught one more after that. Again, no big ones….a few 27″ each nite. Planning on going tonight, weather permitting.
