wondered if there will be any activity late oct, fished hard for them during Sept full moon during the day and only raised one nice one on the north end weeds. I’m going up again Oct 23 for 4 days or so to night troll walleyes and wondered if muskies will be active on the weedlines or do they start to move out of these shallow haunts for the deeper reefs?

troll the north end with big cranks. believers and grandmas work good. They are still there and will be as long as the perch are there……..If the walleyes are in the weeds, the skis are in the weeds……..

Gary, definately will do so, last month we fished Myr mar reef and also Garrison reef really hard, with nothing even following…have you ever raised anything good on either? A friend of mine caught a couple low 40’s while trolling for walleyes during the Sept moon off of Garrison, but nothing happening while casting for them during sunlight.

    Well………

There is a super tanker on Myr-Mar reef that would make the titanic look small……………

I would say it was probably the in the “top 5 class” for the biggest muskies I’ve ever seen. The fish is in the mid 50s and is extremely thick. I had her to the boat 5 times. Once while working a crank, 3 times on a bucktail, and once on a bulldawg. We were casting………That was last month……..She had some serious lock jaw on me (plus the first time she came in I frooze and stared, instead of doing a proper figure-8, so that probably started her decline in interest. She was right at the boat, to where I could have clobbered her with the rod…….

But, I would continue to troll that north break and round Myr-Mar. I’ve honestly never had much luck out on Garrison Reef. I did see a high 40/low 50 boated/knifed/stuffed by two walleye guys about 2 years ago. I’ve trolled Garrison consistently during our fall trolling routines, knowing that there has to be a big pig out there, but never scored on anything big.

I would start at the public access at Wealthwood and go west to the public access just west of Garrison (or south I guess is the location). If you got 3 guys, what I would do is put one spinnerbait (red/black) out about 80′, put a 10″ believer (purple/white) out about 40′, put a grandma or jake (8″ or 10″) about 20 feet in the wash. Put the throttle in gear at a good 3mph and lock the rods in the rod holders with loose drags (not walleye loose, but loose enough for a 30lb fish to strip line) At that speed, when the big tunas hit, I prefer to have things a bit looser than casting, to ensure that I don’t break a rod/rodholder or rip the lure out of a big fish….When you have 4 lines out, sometimes you need a little bit of time to get things ready prior to battling a big fish, so you may not be ready at first strike to pull a rod out of a holder………Just make sure you are prepped if you have a bunch of guys in the boat to keep things safe. You are not going to horse around a 40lb ski, let alone a 20lb ski @ 3mph, so don’t lock your drag down………

If you can stick 4 guys in your boat…….What we will do is put a rod pointing straight down in the water by the wheel driver, in a rod holder. We put a jake or grandma on this line, and only put out about 6′ to 8′ of line. The lure runs right in front of the prop and below. It works and dang is it exciting!!!!!!! Make sure you have a soft rod for this (preferably a strong ugly stick) that has plenty of beef to handle a 30lb fish going bananas on 6′ of line………

If you are stuck with 2 people, I would work the spinner bait and the believer first.

Keep trolling back and forth…………back and forth……….back and forth, until you find some active fish. There are good fish all along that area……….

Now, in exchange for this info, you must swear to the musky gods that you will practice proper CPR, hold the big tunas by the jaw and stomach in a horizontal position, and use good bolt cutters on the hooks!!!

Good luck and post your results when you get back!!!!

Gary, thanks for the info, and yes, I definately practice catch and release. Your trolling knowledge sounds great, maybe we should discuss further sometime over some cold ones. Are you going to be up there anymore this year? If so, I’ll leave your “friend” alone on Myr mar!

And by the way, I love beer…….
