Word is the bass bite is slow. Very. Last night we hooked up a pair of smallies around 11 PM in very shallow water right off the edge of some reeds over some pea gravel. We lost the first one after it jumped and the second fish tried the same manuever but found the bottom of the net despite its best efforts to find it’s way loose.

Maybe guys might want to give the reed beds a look-see if the rocks aren’t producing fish? I’ve never targeted this type of location before but if we’re getting multiple fish after dark on BIG cranks there might be something here worth looking into.

    James,

I haven’t chased Smallies on Mille Lacs (not in my little boat!) but I have spent a fair amount of time on smaller Shield-type lakes around Orr, MN. One of the locations I always hit is a spot where a weeds are associated with rock. For example, a long rock point with reeds on it. Or a rock point at the mouth of a shallow weed filled bay. The Smallies will sit in that alley between the weeds and the shallow rocks. Even during the heat of the day you can find them there.

Have fun on the big lake and stay warm this weekend!
