    I’m seeing alot of people referring to how great the fishing is on the Pond in the fall. I’m planning a trip for the weekend of Oct 16th. Is that a good time to be up there or is that too late? Any advice from experience is appreciated. I’m back for revenge from a near skunked trip from this summer.

    Actually you might be a tad early. The full moon is on the 27th I believe.

    James;

    Have you ever had much luck on the “new moon”?

    If the weather is right, and the skys are clear, the fishing can be decent. We’ve done ok on those nights, primarily focusing on the early and later parts of the evening.

    Hey, also, I think I found a “secret” lure. Something very similar to what you use up there………PM me……To see if I’m on the right track…….

    I’ve had excellent nights up there weeks before and weeks after the full moon. I don’t think the amount of available moon light is as important as the weather. This is based on a LOT of night time up there over the last 6 – 7 years. If you get a hard cold front and a calm night to fall on the night of the full moon things are going to be tough. Get a good storm front blowing through 10 days before the full moon and you’ll have a heck fo a good night. Targeting your trips around the full moon is just playing the percentages. A guy can’t count on the weather but we do know when that full moon will show up each month. If I could only fish one night a month and I had to choose early I’d opt for the full moon and be comfortable doing so.

    Last fall I took Mudlnthru up for a couple nights, one of which was WAY in advance of the full moon. It was windy, rainy and miserable but the fish were just going nutz. There was no moon light with the clouds hanging very thick and very low. Combine that with rain and it was as black dark as the bottom of a well…. but the fish were slamming.

    On dark night you usually need to fish a little bigger, slower and something with rattles. If they’re feeding they can definitely find it.

    Thanks James.
    I can’t make the Full moon trip so I’m stuck with this weekend. I was more curious about the time of year and the water temp. Hopefully it all works out nicely. It sounds like trolling some rattles is the best way to go. Is live bait out by that time?

    Trigger,

    I have done well in the morning with live bait rigging the Northern sand breaks with leeches if you can keep them that long??? Crawlers and Minnows have worked too, but if you can somehow get your hands on some large/jumbo leeches, I have done quite well during the morning on the sand breaks depending on temp (8-20′). Not as well as the Night trolling bite, but still have boated 10-12 fish in the morning.

    Good Luck!

    I don’t fish any livebait that time of the year but rainbows and leech rigged or on slip sinker rigs will produce during the day and at night if you can get right on top of a group of fish.

    I like the plug trolling simply for the average size of the fish we catch.
