Check out the Fishing Page in the sports section of today’s St Paul Pioneer Press.

    Quote:

    Sue Dalzell, South St. Paul,

20 inch, 5 pound smallmouth bass

    Mille Lacs.

The picture shows her holding the fish, standing on land, with a trailered boat in the background.

The law state that all smallmouth less than 21”inches must be immediately returned to the water.

Im sending a letter to the DNR after I post this!

Do you have a link? Would they be able to prove that it wasn’t immediatley released after the picture? Hate to say it, but even w/the picture, any body w/brains could get out of a charge.

The Pioneer Press does not publish pictures on their site. Sure, she may get out of it, but I’m going to insist she gets the ticket!

Everyone reading this call the TIP line. Turn In Poachers. Report it as an illegal possession.

Jon, did you e-mail the paper too? I like to see what they have to say?

There are also lots of people that keep little small mouth bass out of mille lacs that just dont know the laws. The DNR needs to get more exposure on this reg not just at the public landings but at the resorts as well. Most of the signs have all the regs in small print and people dont even bother to read them. Last spring a guy from my resort took his kids to the marina at Izatys and came back with a cooler full of 12-15 inch small mouth. I told him about the regs and he was pretty embarrassed. He said he didnt bother to read the signs since he didnt notice any.

I just saw the picture and that fish is certainly dead. I hope the response is that the pic was before the slot came into effect but the transom on the boat looks to be newer.

KIND OF RELATED I REMEMBER A FEW YEARS BACK A NEWS REPORT OF A PERSON HOLDING A VERY LARGE “NORTHERN” TURNS OUT IT WAS NO NORTHERN BUT A MUSKIE WHICH WAS OUT OF SEASON AT THE TIME. A WARDEN SAW THE REPORT AND ISSUED A TICKET. HOPE THE SAME HAPPENS IN THIS CASE.

I was thinking the same thing for about a second, but then reality set in. It’s the law, stupidity is not an excuse. Believe me, I’ve tried it several times.

I’ve gone to a few DNR meetings in Rochester about regulations. One of my suggestions is to make bigger signs about regulations on stream entrances and boat launch areas. For example: at Roschen Launch Area in Lake City put up a huge sign on the fish cleaning house in big bold letters like, “Warning Read Regulation Signs”! Just and example but at least leave out the excuse that poachers did not know about the regulation signs. In other words, “get more visable with the signs”! They can’t afford more officers to regulate so at least get visable with the signs. I have no problem reading them as they are but first you have to get their attention. That is how you handle jackasses I’ve been told.

I’m telling ya…$200 for a MN resident license…comes complete with a palm pilot to hold all the special reg….(I wish I was joking)

Bottom line…know the regs before you dip your line.

Kinda stained her big fish story…huh?

I do understand the sentiment but every public access I’ve ever used on Mille Lacs has the regs for all species clearly stated.
