haven’t made it up this year yet. What’s going on up there? It seems as the IDO mille lacs post is very slow compared to all the other years. Is there a lot less fishing traffic up on the lake, resorts very busy? Are people not going up anymore bc the new REGS?

I don’t think the bite is really on yet from what I have heard.

IMO it doesn’t matter if the bite is “on” or not. Sunday evening of opening weekend I saw less than 30 boats from Garrison to where 169 turns South. Bottom line is that the DNR has pissed off the people that fish that lake (along with the fact that they “broke” that lake…) and people are responding by not fishing it…Sad but true…

If you want to catch fish there are still plenty to be caught. If you want to keep walleyes – Good luck !!!! from what I hear from friends who have been up there this year the boat traffic is way down – Lots of room on the landings, Lots of lodgeing available ( till the businesses close ) and lots of open water on the lake. It may not be the lake it once was ( and most likely will not be again anytime soon – if ever ) but there are still fish to be caught.

Which other lake could you catch a state record Muskie & Smallmouth on the same trip?? For you guys with kids 10 years old and up get the kids up there when that Smallmouth bite turns on! A few top water fish and you will have a fishing partner for life.

I drive by Cove Bay access twice a day. In 12 years I have not seen it this empty. Often there are zero trailers, seldom more than 6. God gave me a trailer but I pity the resort owners.

…and I just don’t see bass/northerns/musky saving this lake. Walleye reigns supreme up there and we all know it. Things are not going to get back to the “olden’ days” for a long time I’m afraid. The question is will there be anyone (resorts/bait shops) left up there when (if) it does comeback… RR

I think your right. I don’t see the resorts being full on smallie/musky folks. I like everyone else, don’t know the answer. I will still be making my scheduled stops up there, just as I do every other year spending my money at the resorts. I don’t think boycotting the lake helps anyone…..
I think the smaller resorts like Twin Pines ect. are really feeling the crunch, since they relied so heavily on the night launch boat fishing trips.
I still cant wait to get up there in a few days… its such a special place, I look forward to getting there.

I’ve always loved to fish the lake. Haven’t made it up this year yet but I’ll be taking my 8 year old daughter up this year for a couple of trips to see if she can tie into a big girl. I don’t fish the lake for eaters, it’s fun to fish for big fish. Eventually you need eaters in there though to keep people coming.

Many, many of us know the answer. Get the tribal nets out of the lake.

If that’s step 1 of a multi point plan I agree.

I haven’t been up since opener Matt, but I’ll finally be back this weekend and have a report. Unfortunatly I do think the lack of online traffic basically reflects what is going on up there as I hear the resorts and and public accesses are far from full.

I was up the 2nd weekend of the season, Memorial Day weekend, and last weekend.
Traffic is way way down compared to years past. No question,

The lack of reports in my opinion is 2 fold. There is way less pressure on the lake and fishing has been slow. We have had pockets of good bites here and there but over all it has been very slow. Strange weather, water temp spiking about 20 degrees in a 10 day window, and lots of forage in the lake will do that.
It will pick up soon–very soon.

Get up there and support the local businesses the best you can! It is a tough time but some day it will be strong again.

The nets gotta go and it will need to be closed like red was but it is what it is. Have fun, fish for now, and support the community.

Contrary to popular belief, there are still
    Fish in the lake.
